Procurement Forester Trainee Job at Hood Industries, Inc.
Job Summary:
The Procurement Trainee is an entry level position designed to train and acclimate a new hire to the operations and processes of the Procurement Division. Upon completing a structured training plan, the trainee will move into a Timber Buyer or Staff Forester position. This role is responsible for learning and understanding the interactions of the Procurement Division within the Company including but not limited to mill production, external vendors, and corporate-level partners over 4 months.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Job duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Work in a safe manner, understanding and following all company safety rules and procedures. Maintain a current driver’s license in the state of residence.
- Learn Log Yard/Scale House processes including log specifications and deduction procedures, Scale Boss program, and Report Boss reports.
- Work with Procurement Manager to learn the log settlement process and weekly settling of log purchases.
- Learn to conduct In-Woods Quality Checks with Procurement personnel on supplier logging jobs.
- Learn timber purchasing methodologies and procedures for Gate and Company timber purchases; this includes timber estimation, tract logging conditions evaluation, timber grade evaluations, tract suitability for the mill, pricing strategies, and logging & stumpage rate determination.
- Learn local timber markets including competitor mills, pulpwood, and pole markets.
- Work with the Procurement Manager to understand mill production reporting.
- Work with the Staff Forester to understand state Best Management Practices (BMP) guidelines and the company's Sustainable Forestry Program (SFI).
- Gain exposure to the mill manufacturing process through interactions with the production management team.
- Understand the function of other corporate-level departments and their relationships with the Procurement Division. These include People Operations & Culture, Sales, Accounting, and IT.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Education: High school graduate
- Prefer an Associate or Bachelor's level education in Forestry or a related discipline.
- Prior relevant co-op or internship experience preferred.
- Strong communication, organizational, and time management skills
