Position Overview
The Specimen Processing Workflow Coordinator follows laboratory policies and procedures to ensure consistent and diligent execution of specimen processing. The Specimen Processing Workflow Coordinator ensures daily lab operations are effective and efficient by providing direction and guidance to employees during their assigned tasks. The functions of this position are performed under the guided direction of the Specimen Processing Supervisor or designee.
2nd Shift - Tues - Fri, 12:30pm - 11:00pm
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform primary responsibilities listed below completely, timely and accurately:
- Accession and process laboratory specimens.
- Manage incoming sample volume, batch assignment, and fridge storage capacity.
- Create daily and weekly team schedules including, but not limited to, break schedule, and task schedule.
- Direct workflow and manage available resources to maintain sample turnaround time and alleviate bottlenecks.
- Provide redirection conversations to guide the workflow of the lab.
- Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Answer questions, follow up on concerns, and provide guidance to coworkers, as needed.
- Maintain documentation of problems and problem resolutions following Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
- Support operational initiatives including, but not limited to, quality and process improvements and SOP development.
- Handle and dispose of all specimens following universal precautions and applicable safety policies.
- Support and comply with the company’s Quality Management System policies and procedures.

- Ability to work seated for approximately 50% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 50% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 75% of a typical working day.
- Perform work duties on the bench for approximately 75% of a typical working day.
- Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
- Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
- Ability to perform repetitious actions.
- Ability to use near vision to view samples at close range.
- Understand potential exposure to hazardous materials, tissue specimens, and instruments with moving parts, heating, and freezing elements.
- Tolerate the handling of bodily fluids and solids (e.g., urine and feces).
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- 9+ months of experience working in a laboratory, medical or high throughput environment.
- Proficient computer skills to include internet navigation, email usage and Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience directly or indirectly managing or organizing workflow or departmental scheduling.
- Experience working in a laboratory environment doing sample collection, to include working with samples from human, animal, nutritional supplements, food, or pharmaceutical, and collecting, accessioning, labeling, and testing samples, while maintaining sample integrity, following procedures and protocols, and sample collection/handling.
Salary Range:
$34,000.00 - $55,000.00
The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to receive company stock upon hire as well as annually. Benefits offered include a retirement savings plan, paid vacation, holiday and personal days, paid caregiver/parental leave, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms, conditions, and eligibility requirements of the applicable plans.
