About the Role

The Principal IP, Commercial Legal will provide legal support for strategic and high risk intellectual property matters across BHP - in particular the work of the IP Hub / IP Enablement Forum - and high-profile continuous improvement / transformation initiatives within BHP Legal.
Based in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth or Singapore, the role will provide legal support to a wide-range of stakeholders across BHP with a focus on the IP Hub led by the Head of IP, to ensure that IP-related legal risks are identified and managed in accordance with BHP’s Charter Values, IP strategy and commercial objectives.



In this role you will:

  • Advise the Head of IP, Technology and other members of/advisers to the IP Hub on strategic and high risk intellectual property matters, including in respect of accountability for IP decisions, IP strategy, risk and capability across BHP.
  • Advise other stakeholders across BHP on strategic and high risk IP matters, including in respect of seeking and maintaining IP protection, participating in IP disputes and negotiating IP-related terms in strategic and high risk/value contracts.
  • Establish relationships with the IP Hub, other relevant teams in Technology, the Brand team and other relevant stakeholders and act as a key point of contact.
  • Identify IP-related legal risks and advise on the management of those risks.
  • Engage with other Legal teams to ensure consistent delivery of legal support to relevant stakeholders.
  • Contribute expertise to and execute on Legal and IP Hub projects as required, including in respect of continuous improvement and transformation initiatives.
  • Contribute to knowledge management activities as required, including developing and delivering training to Legal, Technology, Brand and other stakeholders on IP-related legal issues.

About You

Qualification

  • Admitted to practice law in Australia.

Experience & Technical Competencies

  • Experience working in a top-tier law firm or international in-house team.
  • Advising on complex IP matters, both contentious and non-contentious across multiple jurisdictions;
  • Advising on trade marks, including in respect of clearance searches, new registrations, portfolio management and disputes;
  • Advising on patents, including in respect of FTO searches, prosecution, portfolio management and disputes;
  • Advising on copyright, including in respect of software;
  • Proactively identifying legal risks and opportunities and advising internal clients accordingly;
  • Influencing and negotiating;
  • Operating independently, with evidence of having used significant legal and commercial judgement to manage risk; and
  • Developing and delivering relevant and up-to-date training and guidance materials.
