The PK-5 Science and Technology/Engineering Department Head works under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning to plan, select, design, implement, and assess the PK-5 Science and Technology/Engineering curriculum, instruction and assessment, while also collaborating with the grades 6-8 and 9-12 Science and Engineering Department Heads, PK-5 building administrators, PK-5 department heads, and K-12 directors to actualize the district vision of excellence and equity in science and technology/engineering for all students in grades PreK-5.


The PreK-5 Department Head for Science and Technology/Engineering responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


  • Coordinate and ensure the articulation and design of the Science and Technology/Engineering curriculum aligned to the MA DESE PK-5 Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) Framework and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
  • Facilitate the design, review, selection, adoption, implementation, ongoing assessment and revision of grades PK-5 STE curriculum, instruction, and assessment materials.
  • Articulate and implement a balanced assessment system for PK-5 STE, including the development of individual/authentic and common/benchmark assessments. Continuously monitor student progress for achievement and growth.
  • Develop teacher knowledge, pedagogy, professional learning and support in the Massachusetts Frameworks for Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) through curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional learning.
  • Plan and facilitate PK-5 STE professional learning through a range of modalities, including coaching, observing and providing informal feedback, co-teaching, conducting model lessons, facilitating pre and post lesson conferences, looking at student work, reviewing and consulting on assessment data, facilitating collaborative classroom visits, and leading curriculum design and development.
  • Provide leadership and support for PK-5 building administrators as they carry out their instructional leadership roles at their schools related to science and technology/engineering.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Multilingual Learners and PK-5 department heads to ensure content integration and language supports are embedded in STE instruction.
  • Collaborate with PK-5 department heads, K-12 directors, and PK-5 building administrators on curriculum implementation and content integration.
  • Collaborate with the grades 6-8 and 9-12 Science and Technology/Engineering Department Heads on vertical articulation and instructional coherence of the STE district curriculum.
  • Lead PK-5 STEM initiatives and collaborate in supporting districtwide STEM initiatives.
  • Evaluate educational equity and academic excellence in science and technology/engineering and recommend changes or adjustments in the STE program, in order to maximize high levels of learning and equitable learning outcomes.
  • Prepare reports for the Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, the Superintendent of Schools and the School Committee regarding PK-5 Science and Technology/Engineering.
  • Keep current with research and innovation in the field of science and technology/engineering in order to educate Wellesley Public Schools on future direction.
  • Foster and maintain a continuous partnership with Wellesley stakeholders in science and technology/engineering (e.g. the Wellesley Education Foundation's Science Committee, Wellesley Green Schools, Wellesley Sustainability, higher education) and collaborate with state and national organizations (e.g. associations in science and technology/engineering, professional job-a-like groups, and MA DESE) to embed rigorous and rich learning opportunities into the PK-5 Science and Technology/Engineering curriculum.
  • Supervise and evaluate PK-5 educators in Science and Technology/Engineering in accordance with the Wellesley Public Schools teacher evaluation system.
  • Collaborate with the Standards Based Report Card Committee to continuously ensure student report cards are updated.
  • Develop and manage the PreK-5 STE budget.
  • Coordinate ordering, distributing, and monitoring of PreK-5 STE materials.
  • Fulfill all other responsibilities related to the administration of the schools as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning.

Qualifications


MA Licensure as Supervisor/Director
Minimum 5 years of early childhood or elementary teaching experience, or related science and technology/engineering teaching experience
Knowledge and experience with MA Science and Technology/Engineering Frameworks and Next Generation Science Standards
Training and experience in culturally responsive curriculum, instruction and assessment
Experience with designing curriculum, instruction and assessment in science and technology/engineering is desirable


Reports to: Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning

Compensation outlined in WEA Unit B collective bargaining agreement
