Position description
Michael Manga and Mengsu Hu are jointly recruiting a postdoc to carry out research on multiscale analysis of fault friction, creep, earthquakes and induced seismicity at UC Berkeley in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS). The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of researchers at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
The Postdoctoral Scholar - Employee will collaborate with a multidisciplinary group to apply micro- (micro-cm) to macro- (m-km) scale numerical modeling and/or laboratory and field characterization to provide predictive understanding of fundamental processes that control the nonlinear friction and creep behavior of faults. These involve measurements and quantitative analysis of faulting and aseismic slip in natural systems (such as the San Andrea fault), as well as in engineering systems such as nuclear waste repositories or enhanced geothermal reservoirs with varied temperature and fluid chemistry conditions.
