The primary focus of Rashnonejad lab is to develop AAV-based gene therapies for Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1B (CMT1B) and Nemaline Myopathy. Our lab is in the Center for Gene Therapy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH). The NCH Center for Gene Therapy has a long track record of training leaders in gene therapy and has been the site of the development of the first FDA-approved AAV-mediated gene therapy for neuromuscular disease (SMA), and several other gene therapies have reached clinical trials.
Our lab is seeking highly motivated individuals interested in developing gene therapy and other translational approaches to treat neurodegenerative and neuromuscular diseases. A successful candidate should have extensive experience in
molecular biology (cloning, western blot, qRT-PCR, and fluorescent staining), tissue cryosectioning and histological assays, mouse colony maintenance, mouse surgery and injections. The postdoc will start working on the projects that already exist in our lab however they are strongly encouraged to develop new ideas and apply for grants.
The Post-Doctoral Scientist will participate in focused research investigations on these topics:
- Viral Gene Therapy
- Cell-Specific Gene Expression
- Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease
- Nemaline Myopathy
- Performs research experiments independently after the training period. With guidance from the PI, the postdoc will design experiments and develop protocols required to conduct productive research. After the study has been designed, the postdoc will perform the research work in accordance with the protocol.
- Handling, breeding, behavior testing, injecting, dissecting mice, and mounting tissue for use in research studies, as applicable. Molecular biology and cell culture skills are also required. Such activities may be performed independently and may require evening and weekend hours.
- Writes protocols, maintains the Lab Notebook, collects and analyzes data, interacts with collaborators.
- Records and analyzes research results, and helps to plan future research endeavors.
- Prepares scientific and technical papers and publishes papers in appropriate refereed scientific journals.
- Presents his/her findings at leading conferences in the field
- Trains and supervises graduate students and technical support staff in performing specific techniques essential to carrying out the research program.
- This is considered a training position; therefore, the Research Institute will allow Post-Doctoral training for up to five years.
- Works toward research independence.
- Prepares to submit proposals to and obtain funding from external granting agencies.
- Bringing new ideas to develop novel gene therapies for neurodegenerative diseases and neuropathies.
- Maintains a clean working area and performs general laboratory maintenance. Adheres to proper safety techniques and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required for scientific excellence in the research program.
- PhD, MD/PhD, or MD (or equivalent degrees) in Cellular and Molecular biology, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Genetics, Immunology, or related disciplines who are interested in developing gene therapies for neurodegenerative and muscular disorders
- Creative, highly motivated, and ambitious candidates
- Ability to lead independent research projects and design experiments
- Prior experience and background in gene therapy research are preferred but not required; we are interested in developing new investigators into the field
- Extensive experience in molecular biology (cloning, western blot, qRT-PCR, and fluorescent staining)
- Prior experience with tissue cryosectioning and histological assays, mouse colony maintenance, mouse surgery and injections is
- Ability to do technical writing, and good communication skills.
- US citizenship or permanent residency is not required.
We can offer potential candidates:
- Up to 5 years of salary and project support
- Substantial financial support to develop new ideas
- Strong mentorship to support career development toward academia or industry jobs
- State-of-the-art laboratories and core facilities
