About The Position:
The Pool Manager position at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center is vital to daily operations. This position handles day to day operations of the aquatic & fitness center, assists in hiring staff, scheduling staff, creating contracts for partner teams, private rentals, birthday parties, high schools, and commercial rentals. This position conducts staff trainings, staff certifications, and audits. The Pool Manager oversees 80 part-time lifeguard/instructors as well as 10 assistant pool managers. The manager provides customer service to guests who visit the facility as well as handle any concerns that arise. The position also oversees the skatepark and adjacent fields. The Pool Manager is part of the aquatic management team which assists in providing all the certification courses for both lifeguard and swim instructors, participates in being on-call to ensure 7 day a week full time presence and participates in various aquatic working teams. The Pool Manager may also assist at other aquatic center locations as needed.
Pool Managers work various hours, typically ranging from 5:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., and must be available to work any day of the week (including certain holidays). Applicants must possess a valid StarGuard ELITE Instructor certification or American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification. Ideal candidates would also possess a valid Starfish Swim Instructor Trainer or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Trainer certification.

PLEASE NOTE: Years of experience are based on a work schedule of 2,080 hours per year for full-time positions and 1,040 hours per year for part-time positions, and while work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis, depending upon the job classification, education may not be substituted for work experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum of one season (3-6 months) experience as an Assistant Pool Manager responsible for the operation and management of a municipal swimming pool facility.
- Must have at least six months of Lead or Supervisory experience.
- Must possess and maintain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification prior to the start date.
- Possess and maintain a valid StarGuard Lifeguard Certification and Starfish Swim Instructor certificate; or a valid Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate, a Water Safety Instructor's Certificate, a Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certificate, and standard first aid certificate.
- Obtain and maintain a valid StarGuard Lifeguard Instructor Certification and Starfish Swim Instructor Trainer Certification within six months of hire.
- Candidates must successfully pass an OSHA-required respirator physical within 45 calendar days from hire or promotion, and annually thereafter.
- Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises employees and coordinates personnel-related activities to include, but not limited to: training, approving work schedules, recommending/approving personnel actions, coaching and counseling, establishing performance goals, and writing performance evaluations.
- Maintains, analyzes, and submits written records of daily attendance, revenue, sanitary water conditions (chlorine and pH readings), water back-washing, accidents, rescues, and assists and first aid.
- Conducts aquatic classes.
- Enforces pool regulations and verbally explains rules and activities to staff and the pool patrons.
- Attends and conducts staff meetings on the importance of safety and life saving skills, processes and procedures.

- Most work is performed in a swimming pool environment with occasional work performed in a normal City office environment.
- Climb up/down ladder to lifeguard chair; sit in stationary lifeguard chair for long periods of time maintaining constant vigilance to the surrounding pool deck area.
- Required to move around on deck to make observations.
- Operate a cash register and accurately handle money.
- Concentrates on and complete tasks in the presence of distractions.
- Lifts dead weight usually exceeding 100 pounds.
- Exposure to dust, noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes, pool chemicals, chemically treated pool water, and extended direct exposure to the sun.
- Lifts equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a daily basis.
- Acts quickly and calmly in emergencies; administers first aid and CPR; performs rescue actions.
- Lifts arms above shoulder level.
- Operate a variety of standard office equipment including: computer, telephone, calculator, copy and fax machine requiring continuous and repetitive arm, hand and eye movement.
- Works days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
