JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs police patrol, traffic control and enforcement, initial investigations into criminal and non-criminal activity and related functions involving the safety and protection of life and property. Promotes crime prevention, apprehends criminals, and enforces local ordinances, State and Federal laws and regulations in a designated area of an assigned shift.

SALARY

Current starting salary $69,909; negotiating new contract effective May 2023

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Possess a valid driver’s license in good standing
  • U.S. citizen and/or alien admitted for permanent residence or lawfully admitted for temporary residence and who produces evidence of intention to become a citizen of the United States.
  • 21 years of age by date of hire
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Possess no record of felony convictions or crime of moral turpitude
  • Must be able to meet vision standard at time of appointment. Must be correctable to 20/20 with both eyes open, including field of vision/depth perception/color vision within normal ranges. Excellent health.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general supervision of a Sergeant; responsible for the protection of life and property; prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, and the general enforcement of laws and ordinances in a designated area on an assigned shift or on special assignments; routine patrol; preliminary investigation, and traffic regulation duties which may be performed in motorized vehicles, bicycle or on foot; involves an element of personal danger and the employee must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies; assignments may include work at the police department on special tasks, which call upon experience as a uniformed patrol officer; assignments are general and special instructions are received from a superior officer who revises work methods and results through reports, personal inspection and discussion.

Establish a bond between the South Elgin Police Department and the community in an effort to reduce or remove the opportunity for crime; Report promptly at the designated hour and place, in proper uniform for assignment; Conduct public education programs on community relations and safety via various community group meetings; Answer calls and complaints involving fire, robberies and other criminal and non-criminal activity; Ascertain all facts available at the scene of a crime or accident; Obtain statements from witnesses; Protect and gather evidence; Prepare reports to be used in follow-up investigations; Attend regularly required and elective training classes in police methods, first aid, use of force and related subjects; Issue citations, execute warrants, make arrests and take prisoners to jail; Conduct himself or herself in the safest manner and must follow safety guidelines in an attempt to minimize on the job injuries. Furthermore each employee has the responsibility to report any unsafe condition or activity to a supervisor; Assist attorneys in prosecuting felony and misdemeanor cases, testify in court; Patrol village streets, roads, and public places, either on foot, by motorized vehicle, or bicycle either at large or in a designated area to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime or unsafe conditions, and to enforce motor vehicle and parking regulations on streets and roads; While on patrol, maintains high visibility to deter violations; Drive a patrol vehicle in a safe and responsible manner; Direct traffic; Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations; Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities; Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area; Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts;
Respond promptly to calls for service; Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved; Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries; Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed; Testify in court to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases; Photograph or draw diagrams of crime or accident scenes, canvass areas and interview principals and eyewitnesses; Perform related tasks as necessary.

High school diploma or GED.

Must possess the following certifications and/or licenses: Illinois Driver's License and the ability to obtain a Firearm/Weapon License.
