Physical Therapist – Job Description

The Independent Living Center Physical Therapist will report to the Community Integrated
Supports and Services (CIS&S) Director of the organization and work with the Director and other members of the CIS&S Team. The Physical Therapist will provide treatments to consumers of CIS&S.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Basic Job Functions:

  • Provide physical therapy techniques like massages, movement trainings and exercises to help ILC-Mobile’s consumers recover from their injuries or illnesses.
  • Work closely with consumers to learn more about their conditions to develop personalized treatment plans that will assist them to return back to normal health.
  • Educate consumers and their caregiver on how to perform the exercises and treatments at the organization or in their home.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide compassion and empathy for consumers, who are often in pain.
  • Perform initial consumer’s physical assessment, following up with reassessments for person-centered care plan.
  • Provide attention to detail regarding a consumer’s problem(s) to analyze what they need to ease their pain and/or to prevent further injury or discomfort.
  • Assist consumer to create a person-centered physical therapy care plan.
  • Have strong interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with consumers and motivate them and their caregiver to engage in the care as recommended.
  • Assist consumers to stretch and exercise certain muscle groups.
  • Read, review and clearly articulate instructions.
  • Speak with consumer and caregiver using best at-home techniques.
  • Keep physical therapy area and equipment clean and organized.
  • Move consumers from wheelchairs/walkers to appropriate therapy area.
  • Teach consumers techniques such as balance training or other physical trainings as needed.
  • Complete administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, filing paperwork, regularly reviewing and updating consumer’s care plan.
  • Complete documentation as directed in accordance with agency policies.
  • Complete and submit incident reports to CIS&S Director.
  • Notify supervisor of any absence in advance so that appropriate steps may be taken to obtain a substitute.
  • Attend staff, team and Person-Centered Planning meetings as directed.
  • Identify opportunities to enable individual and organizational growth through physical therapy learning, development, and training opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and requested.

The ideal candidate will also bring the following skills and experience.

Qualifications:

Education: Licensed Physical Therapist preferred, Physical Therapist Assistant may be acceptable

Training: CPR Certification
Experience: Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities preferred.
General Skills: Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

Physical Skills: Have a physical stamina to lift consumers and spent long hours standing and modeling exercises.

Independent Living Specialists work with consumers regarding the broad-range of disability-related information and/or referrals. Consumers and family members are provided with assistance to utilize accessible resources and/or referrals to agencies in their respective Southwest Alabama Counties.

  • Advocacy

Learn how to advocate for yourself and have your voice heard while acting for change that offers equal opportunity for people with disabilities. We can help you contact your government officials, write letters or make phone calls, travel to Montgomery for special events or just figure out how to stand up for your rights in your own life.

  • Peer Support

Learn problem-solving solutions, share Successes and build relationships with other individuals with disabilities who may share your needs/concerns.

Receive assistance relocating from an institution into your own home. Get help learning about the things you will need to be successful – such as finding housing, setting up utilities, and arranging and getting support from others.
