PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
Summary: Assists Pharmacist in clinical and retail settings performing the following duties.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned. All delegated tasks must occur while the delegate is under the personal charge of a pharmacist.

Job Knowledge, Professional Responsibility, Quality and Judgment weight: 45%
- Mixes pharmaceutical preparations.
- Assists pharmacists to prepare and dispense medication.
- Fills vials with prescribed tablets and capsules.
- Types labels for appropriate packaging.
- Enters and processes new/refill prescription information into pharmacy computer system.
- At the pharmacist's discretion, certified pharmacy technicians may receive verbal prescription orders from medical offices and transfer prescriptions to other pharmacies within limitations of state laws.
- Has pharmacist check work when completed.
- Computes prescription charges.
- Prints patient education information.
- Follows up with billing claim problems and corrects rejected insurance claims.
- Receives and stores incoming medication and supplies.
- Controlled substances will be verified by the pharmacist.
- Confirms receipt of all items with invoices.
- Adds price stickers to all items received.
- Shelves items; rotating older stock.
- Places orders to maintain proper stock levels.
- This does NOT include controlled substance Class II medications.
- Prepares clinic medication supply orders for pharmacist to review.
- Removes outdated product from shelves per Pharmacy Procedure PH-100-C-2.
- Counts stock and enters data into computer to maintain inventory records.
- Performs sorting and filing of prescription records.
- Requests prescription refills in TBCHS EMR for TBCHS patients when needed.
- Assists with Prior Authorization requests as required by third party prescription carriers.
Safety & Infection Control Weight: 5%
- Cleans equipment and sterilizes glassware according to prescribed methods.
- Places patient un-wanted medications into the approved receptacles.
Communications and Interaction with Patients Weight: 25%
- Answers telephone; refers call to pharmacist when appropriate.
- Assist patients by scanning prescriptions to capture electronic signature upon pickup and collect copays.
Organization Support Weight: 10%
- Acknowledges Policies and Procedures written by Thunder Bay Community Health Service, Inc. and implements into daily practice.
Quantity Weight: 5%
- Will work at an efficient pace to meet the needs of the department.
Adaptability Weight: 10%
- Will actively participate to identify ways to adapt to changes in the work environment to meet the needs of the department.
- Will balance teamwork with individual responsibilities.
- Pharmacy Director may request assistance to work on special assignments (e.g. Physical Inventory, Monthly billing of charge accounts, 340B audits, etc.).
Duties that may NOT be delegated to Pharmacy Technicians include (other duties may be identified):
- Patient counseling on general health topics.
- Educate patients about the medications.
- Advise physicians on drug selection, interactions and adverse reactions.
- Class II controlled substance orders.
- Receipt and signing of invoices for controlled substances (class II-V) from wholesalers.
- Dispense prescription drugs without pharmacist checking.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Pharmacy Technician Certification or Limited Pharmacy Technician License, Pharmacy Technician License.
Physical Demands: Medium
Travel: Site to Site travel may be required.

- Pharmacy technician experience: 1 year (Preferred)
