General Purpose of Job:
The Pharmacist Educator uses the tools, theories, skills, and knowledge of the specialty to improve the healthcare practice of learners. This individual will develop, coordinate, and provide education/competency to all pharmacy staff members. The pharmacist may have to develop the educational content. Ensures staff competency or remediation as necessary for various pharmacy related topics (both inpatient and outpatient).

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.

  • Orientation is one facet of the onboarding process and is comprised of an individualized program to guide the new hire towards job competency. Orientation occurs during onboarding and also when changes in roles, responsibilities, and practice settings occur.
  • Competency management is a dynamic process designed to support ongoing assessment, evaluation and documentation of performance.
  • Assist with new hire orientation (i.e., orientation packet, office supplies, desk assignment, department key, etc.).
  • Assure and advance the quality of continuing pharmacy education, thereby assisting in the advancement of the practice of pharmacy
  • Design educational activities to address practice gaps or new educational needs as required for identified target audiences, which may include continuing education (CE). Will required to become a CE planner if needed.
  • Assists others in their professional role development, practice role transitions, and succession planning. Professional role development involves identification and development of strategies to facilitate a continuous process of maturation through lifelong learning.
  • Participation in research, evidence-based practice (EBP), and quality improvement (QI).
  • Collaborate with partners to share expertise in planning and decision making to achieve the desired results.
  • Facilitates rapport between the Department of Pharmacy, Nursing, and other clinical departments.
  • Appropriately uses age-specific concepts and language when communicating with employees, visitors, patients and others.
  • Answers phone calls promptly and politely.
  • Drafts new policies and procedures as needed.
  • Effectively communicates with colleagues.
  • Liaises with external agencies/organizations, as required.
  • Routinely checks all available means of communication including e-mail, mail, and voice mail if applicable.
  • Performs other related duties or special projects as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited College of Pharmacy with a B.S. or PharmD degree.
  • Experience: Pharmacy experience (2-4 years) in a hospital setting strongly preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations.
  • Current licensure either by reciprocity or examination by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
