Primary Responsibilities
Under the general direction of the Patient Access Manager and or Supervisor is responsible for a wide range of registration activities of inpatient, outpatient and emergency room patients. Assists in the coordination of patient care by organizing and coordinating the flow of communication in E.D. The patient Service clerk will obtain accurate and complete demographic and financial information.

Essential Duties
- Responsible for complete and accurate pre-registration, full registration of patients obtaining services at the facility via walk in or Hospital wide schedule.
- Verifies insurance coverage, benefits (Medicare, Medicaid, HMSA, Commercial Insurance, etc.) and collects co-payment.
- Secures treatment authorizations, obtains signatures on all required forms, collecting patient responsibility amounts, Initiates Medicaid referrals, and provides financial assistance applications to patients.
- Obtains information required for all stages of meaningful use.
- Verifies that patients are admitted to the correct status, service and room accommodation. Obtains physician orders. Assists with Admissions reports. Maintains and reviews E.R. log.
- Verifies Medical necessity
- Works closely with nursing and ancillary departments in effort to maintain a teamwork approach.
- Works with case managers, financial counselor and coordinators to facilitate inpatient, observation, WNRC, Senior Behavior Health admissions, discharges and transfers.
- Answers phones and routes calls to appropriate staff.
- Assists with organizing transfer of patients to referral center and other Hospitals.
- Maintains a close working relationship with staff physicians and medical staff. Organizes patients chart.
Other Duties
- Maintains a close working relationship with staff physicians and medical staff office.
- Orders forms and other clerical supplies for the department
- Provides switchboard relief.
- Follows hospital corporate Compliance program policies
- Complies with hospital and departmental work rules and policies
- Retrieves Medical Records as needed
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Skills/Knowledge:
- Good communication and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
- Accurate and efficient in typing and data entry.
- Ability to read, write and speak the English language sufficiently well to perform the duties of the position.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating work processes with others.
- Demonstrates effective problem solving and problem prevention skills.
- Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, patients, families, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, patients, co-workers, physicians.
- Ability to maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
- Proficient in the use of hospital or medical office computer programs, Excel, Access, Word and other desktop programs
- Employment is subject to being completely vaccinated or having a WGH approved COVID-19 Vaccine Exemption prior to providing services for the facility.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
- Six (6) months of registration experience preferably in a hospital or medical practice.
Enhanced Qualifications:
- Seasoned experience in healthcare registration.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology.
- Completion of college or equivalent courses.
- Certificate of completion in ICD-10 and CPT coding.

- Air conditioned office. May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases.
Equipment Use
- Use of general office equipment.
Mental and Physical Demands
- Ability to lift/carry or push/pull up to 10 pounds.
- Position involves reaching, sitting, standing and walking.
