Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP, an international law firm, is actively recruiting a Patent Docket Coordinator. This position maintains accurate patent and trademark information in computerized database. Provides staff leadership in supporting firm, office and team initiatives and in support of management directives.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Follows the ethical requirements set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the State in which employed.
- Basic knowledge and application of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and foreign Patent Offices rules and regulations. Stays abreast of current rule changes and informs Team of same.
- Maintains patent and trademark prosecution docket databases (docket system).
- Reviews USPTO and foreign agent correspondence, including documents from foreign Patent Offices, received via postal delivery, electronic correspondence and/or received via designated patent and trademark prosecution email addresses, for entry of docketable dates and comments into docket system.
- Cross-references client/matter numbers with application numbers and country, including verification of applicable fields in docket system.
- Compares docket instructions received from Team members with master daily docket to ensure due dates and deadlines are met.
- Verifies corresponding number of USPTO and foreign Patent Office submissions, including postcards (if any) are properly date-stamped and returned from USPTO, against previous day’s submissions.
- Generates and distributes docket reports to Team members including bi-monthly advance patent and trademark prosecution docket reports, daily docket reports, and retroactive docket reports to account for previous dates not cleared.
- Maintains incoming and outgoing USPTO mail logs.
- Reviews and verifies documents received after submission to the USPTO including application number, document is executed, total number of pages of new applications, including drawing pages; accountability and coordination of final release of courier (if applicable) to USPTO each day (if applicable).
- Provides assistance and input with respect to updating, modifying and reformatting computerized databases, including creating customized queries and reports when necessary.
- Monitors US and foreign Patent Offices rule changes and implements necessary procedures and modifications to ensure computerized database accurately reflects deadlines; generates special reports regarding client, country and matter, and assists when necessary with docketing and review of prosecution files transferred into or out of firm.
- Provides overflow to other docket coordinators.
- Performs special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent. College degree preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of three years’ related patent and trademark experience in computerized database entry.
- Other Qualifications: Basic knowledge and application of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and foreign Patent Offices rules and regulations. Accurate typing of at least 50 wpm. Must be detail oriented. Proficient skills, including filing and general office procedures. Must have speed and accuracy when working in the database. Ability to deal effectively and diplomatically with legal and non-legal staff. Ability to work independently and overtime, on an as needed basis. Ability to work well under pressure, patience, diplomacy, high stress tolerance, excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing conditions. Visual acuity needed for transcription, extensive reading and input (typing) of information into computer. Ability to receive and convey detailed information through oral communication. Essential competency processes including language ability, reasoning and retention. To perform this job successfully, the candidate must possess the abilities or aptitudes to proficiently perform each of the responsibilities and accountabilities described above, with or without reasonable accommodation.
The expected salary range for New York City based employees is $61,200 to $87,200, though salaries for employees based outside of New York City may differ. Beyond an employment candidate's physical location, salary offers may be based on a number of factors, including but not limited to, education, training, and/or experience.
