Job Summary:
The IP Manager is a new role, reporting to the VP, General Counsel, at our Austin Headquarters. This role will be responsible for our global IP strategy and portfolio, partnering closely with key business leaders and functions to manage patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. This role will be responsible for implementing a wholistic approach to IP generation to ensure protection of the company and our IP with a cost-effective approach.
Job Responsibilities:
- Review patent and trademark historical spend to determine strategic approach to future IP filings.
- Liaise with outside counsel to prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications and perform patent utilization and right-to-use analyses.
- Establish objective criteria for new patent, trademark filings, and invention disclosures.
- Track progress and organize information pertaining to DFS’s IP portfolio of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
- Manage and facilitate internal inventorship program that encourages innovation within engineering, operations, marketing, and business development.
- Lead cross-functional technology evaluation and review to enable IP decision making (Tech Review Board / Big Idea).
- Curate existing ideas, IP, concepts, and other innovations to ensure visibility and training of engineers (”IP catalog”).
- Coordinate efforts of innovators and legal counsel through the patenting process.
- Manage and facilitate monthly Global IP council meetings.
- Identify IP assets that are no longer aligned with DFS business strategy.
- Maintain strict document control practices.
- Coordinate DFS Global IP activities.
- Support administration of patent award program by Human Resources.
- Build and maintain working relationships with global IP contributors and legal counsel.
- Manage and coach outside counsel to ensure best quality of work and responsible use of resources.
- Work with internal and external counsel to oversee IP due diligence activities with respect to third party licensing and acquisition projects.
- Track monthly IP outside counsel spend and other IP services.
- Support DFS budget preparation and cost/benefit analysis as needed.
Required Job Qualifications:
- A degree in business, law, science, engineering or related field.
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in related field or 5 years’ experience in related field plus graduate degree.
- Working knowledge of state, federal, and international laws regarding technology transfer and intellectual property.
- Understanding of commercialization process.
- Demonstrated history of working directly with engineers and marketers in translating their concepts into a strategy resulting in solid legal protection.
- Willingness to take ownership and results oriented with ability to prioritize and manage competing demands.
- Demonstrated superior verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize.
- Demonstrated ability to provide sophisticated but practically-minded IP input and strategy without compromising integrity.
- Ability to work in an international environment. Must possess diplomacy skills with ability to effectively manage IP issues across multiple constituencies and cultures.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
- Registered Patent Agent in good standing to practice before the USPTO.
- Master’s Degree.
