This is a Part-Time Instruction Faculty Position
Position Summary:
Student learning is the primary responsibility of WGU faculty. Instructors are subject matter experts who teach and mentor students when students engage in their assigned courses. Instructors vary the type, length, and intensity of instructional method based upon student needs. Instructors work on a team to support our students and offer specialized instruction on challenging topics. Using technology, Instructors interact with students in both group and one-on-one settings. As part of WGU’s disaggregated faculty model, Instructors provide their expertise and collaborate with the faculty who are responsible for developing and evaluating courses and assessments. Part-time Personalized Next Attempt Instructors will focus their attention on developing and delivering personalized next attempt plans for students who have not been successful on their objective assessment. More specifically, this role will be responsible for the following areas of student support: Creating and delivering personalized next attempt plans for students enrolled in Organizational Behavior and Fundamentals for Success in Business courses.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Acts as a steward for carrying out WGU’s mission and strategic vision. The Instructor must demonstrate a high level of commitment effectively and consistently.
- Provides expertise in assigned content area and maintains current knowledge in his/her field.
- Demonstrates excellence in delivering creative and interactive live event content.
- Fosters student learning through innovative teaching practices, in a one-to-many setting.
- Applies professional and engaging presentation style that facilitates student learning in large groups.
- Works well in environments that demand flexibility to answer student questions and meet student needs, such as open office hours or general Q&A sessions.
- Communicates professionally and respectfully with students and all other members of the WGU community.
- Offers proactive support and outreach to students to facilitate live events.
- Uses technology-based teaching and communication platforms to aid students in the development of competencies.
- Collaborates with other professionals within the university to promote a positive, student-obsessed atmosphere.
- Participates in and or leads training activities.
- Responds with urgency to changing requirements, priorities, and short deadlines.
- Can work a schedule centered on student demand (evenings and weekends).
- Demonstrates ability to work independently while aligning with team goals, strategies, and outcomes.
- Consistently exhibits WGU Leadership Principles.
- Maintain a non-traditional 20-hours per week evening and weekend schedule (in Mountain Time Zone) Periodic traditional day-time hours to be scheduled for meetings and training, as applicable.
This is a Part-Time Instruction Faculty Position
Department Specific Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctorate or terminal degree in business related area required or a business related masters degree with significant work experience.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience providing student support and instruction.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience of teaching in a higher education setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work with at-risk learners.
- State and/or federal legislative requirements and/or college accreditation requirements may apply in order to maintain the necessary credentialing for this role.
- Works primarily from home within the continental United States and is available to travel to meetings as required.
- Ability to work a student-friendly schedule (Typical schedules are Tuesday- Saturday or Sunday – Thursday evenings/weekends).
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 3-5+ years’ experience teaching adults in Higher Education; preferably in an online distance based model.
- Experience providing student support and instruction in a one-to-many setting; demonstrated ability to work with struggling or at-risk learners.
- Ability to breakdown and disseminate difficult topics in a manner that students will understand and grasp.
- Ability to travel for training, Academic Meetings and/ or Commencements (when it is again safe to travel).
- Ability to deliver exceptional customer service (AKA “Student Obsession") to our Students.
- Candidate must reside within the continental US.
Preferred Experience:
- Strong experience with distance education and distance learning students is preferred.
- 5-10 years of online teaching experience; Knowledge and experience with competency-based education models
- Extensive professional experience
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
