Position and Salary Information
The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 2 in the Bankruptcy and Collections Unit. This position is located in downtown Seattle, Washington and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).
Salary
Paralegal 2 Salary Range 54: 54,492 - 73,260 annually
The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:
Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend.- Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.

Division Information:
The Bankruptcy and Collections Unit (BCU) encourages voluntary compliance with the state's tax laws by supporting the efforts of state agencies to aggressively pursue money owed to the state. Most of the money is owed for delinquent sales and business and occupation taxes, industrial insurance premiums and unemployment fund contributions.
The BCU gives priority to representing the Departments of Revenue, Labor & Industries, and Employment Security in bankruptcy cases. Assistance has also been provided to other agencies including Agriculture, Community Trade & Economic Development Corrections, Financial Institutions, Ecology, Health, Higher Education Coordinating Board, Licensing, Parks & Recreation, Natural Resources, Social & Health Services, State Investment Board, State Patrol, Transportation, University of Washington, Washington State University, Utilities & Transportation Commission and the AGO Consumer Protection Division.
What does a Paralegal 2 do?
Under general direction, this position supports the mission of the BCU by ensuring that complex paralegal support is provided to the BCU attorneys.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Verify status of agency liens, determine deadlines for filing, calculate debtor liability, identify competing liens/claims and determine other factors that may affect bankruptcy or collections claims, and determine the merits of a case or claim;- Files and serves legal documents with court and parties;
- Analyze facts from research to gauge collection prospects;
- Complete all case intake and file preparation;
- Research and gather facts using client databases and files;
- Communicate with client agencies for fact finding, case determinations, and distribution of funds;
- Independently determine monetary recovery allocation and provide disbursement instructions to fiscal staff; and
- Calculates, calendars and tracks significant events and identifies critical deadlines.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Option 1: Graduation from an accredited two-year paralegal program plus two years’ experience as a paralegal.
Option 2: Graduation from an accredited four-year college and completion of a nine-month paralegal program plus one year experience as a paralegal.
Option 3: Three years’ experience as a paralegal.
Option 4: Two years as a Paralegal 1 in Washington State service.
