Position Summary

The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 200 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately 8 million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land with an operating budget of approximately $40,000,000.

The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self-funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and over 150 student assistants with an annual operating budget exceeding $128,000,000. OHA provides housing for over 8,500 students in 23 communities with over 2 million sq. ft. of residential facilities. The OHA manages the operation of residence halls, apartments, and conference and event spaces. The OHA supports the educational mission of the Residential Education Office (REO) while providing business operations for all housing-related functions in support of a quality environment to enhance the student educational experience.

Under general supervision, the Painter performs the full range of skilled painter work including preparation of surfaces for painting and finishing (scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, glazing, and applying fillers and primers) and application of finishes (using brush, roller, spray and electro-static spray equipment). The Painter mixes and matches paints and finishes; performs sand and water blasting; erects scaffolding and hangs rigging.


This is a full-time (1.0 time-base) benefits-eligible, permanent (probationary) position. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on-campus at SDSU in San Diego.


Education and Experience

Journey-level skill equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter’s apprenticeship program.

Any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painter’s apprenticeship program.


Specialized Skills Required

  • Must be able to work unsupervised on a variety of job tasks from simple to complex
  • Must be able to perform strenuous physical work; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination
  • Must be able to follow simple written and oral instructions
  • Must have the ability to analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations and to recognize, secure and report unsafe conditions immediately
  • Must have knowledge of safe working techniques and safety equipment and must be aware of the typical hazards of the workplace as well as the special hazards that may be encountered (biohazards, chemicals, asbestos/lead containing materials)
  • Must have ability to understand and apply university and departmental policies and procedures

Licenses and/or Certifications Required

  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one prior to appointment


Preferred Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of current applicable state and federal regulations and current health and safety codes, including appropriate references of CalOSHA and Federal OSHA
  • Minimum of four years of experience painting in a commercial setting. Two years of experience in drywall finishing


Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $6,134 per month.

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $5,787 - $7,396 per month.


SDSU Vaccine Policy

In accordance with the California State University systemwide policy, students, faculty, and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or provide a valid medical or religious exemption in order to access campus. An individual is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose of a two-shot vaccine or two weeks after the first dose of a single-shot vaccine. Afterward a COVID-19 booster is required to continue to be considered fully vaccinated.

The individual hired into this role will be required to submit their completed vaccination documentation to the university’s secure online health portal prior to beginning work. Individuals with an approved medical or religious exemption on file with the university will be required to participate in SDSU’s COVID-19 testing program.
