PA/ARNP Hospitalist - Internal Medicine Job at The University of Iowa
Provide medical care and management for patients, exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided for the Internal Medicine patient with an emphasis on cardiology patients. Function independently to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the Internal Medicine cardiology inpatient population. Job includes rotating through several services, including hospitalist teams, cardiology consult team, and monitoring of pharmacological and treadmill stress tests.
As the hospitalist team, facilitate the transition of care from the ED to inpatient cardiology services. Focus on the caring for hospitalized patients to manage care and length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care. On the cardiology consult service, evaluate and manage cardiology consult inpatients and work with the primary team to facilitate appropriate care, including cardiac catheterization, stress testing, and medication therapy. For the stress test portion of the position, screen patients for appropriateness of the study and monitor patient during pharmacological or treadmill stress test. The position requires staffing nights and weekends. New graduates are encouraged to apply.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Provision of Medical Care; Collaboration with Care Team:
Perform/order medical diagnostics and therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medication.
Consult/collaborate with other care team members.
Monitoring pharmacological and treadmill stress tests.
Use judgment to apply/adopt information within total clinical picture to address health issues.
Influence others to adopt best practices.
Staff the Internal Medicine service lines including nights and weekends.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession and Education:
Complete patient medical records, reports, and forms to record treatment for medical documentation and billing purposes.
Improve quality of care by performing chart reviews and participating on performance improvement committees.
Education/ Health/ Promotion/ Research:
Provide health education to patients and medical education to health professions students and residents.
Participate in ongoing research and professional development of self and other staff.
Administration/ Human Resources Management:
Establish and maintain procedures and systems to assure staff compliance with policies and standards of care.
Initiate corrective action as needed.
Serve on committees to enhance patient care and operations.
Assure team provides effective collaboration/communications.
May provide feedback and coaching to other team members to assure quality of care.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Supervision is received from the APP Lead.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Functional supervision may be exercised over support staff.

Education/License Requirements:
Physician Assistant (PA): Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.
Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP): A Master’s degree is required. A Master’s degree in Nursing is preferred. If a Master’s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing is required.
ARNP - Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
ARNP - Current license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa is required.
Required Qualifications:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Reasonable (1-3 years) experience in area of Internal Medicine clinical practice or previous experience in specified hospital specialty area or demonstrated knowledge of area of clinical practice is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff and students is required.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience providing overall medical care and provide medical management for adult patients in a General Internal Medicine inpatient setting is highly desirable.
- Experience exercising autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided is highly desirable.
- Experience managing length of stay, improve resource utilization and decrease costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care is highly desirable.
- Experience with the evaluation and treatment of General Internal Medicine patients and the supervision of General Internal Medicine procedures is highly desirable.
- The ability to see a pediatric population through Family Nurse Practitioner certification is desirable. Licensed PA applicants have this ability through their license.
- Experience with pre-surgical evaluation of adult and/or pediatric patients is desirable.
