Position: Ophthalmic Technician
Reports to: Clinical Supervisor
Perlmutter Eye Center is a well-established independent Physician owned Ophthalmology practice committed to excellence here in the Capital Region. We are looking for an experienced Ophthalmology Technician as we continue to grow our practice. The ideal candidate would be someone who is reliable, efficient, able to multi-task and willing to learn a variety of tasks.
This position would require willingness to travel between our two offices which are located in Albany and Clifton Park.
Job Summary and Responsibilities
The technician’s primary responsibility is to assist the physicians in providing care to patients. These tasks include, but are not limited to the following:
- Informing patients of the purpose of all tests and procedures performed and how they will be affected during the tests
- Obtaining patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications
- Performing accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include A-scans and visual fields
- Performing fundus photography
- Performing OCTs
- Performing refractions
- Topography/Topographer
- IOL Master
- Bscans
- Optos Machine
- Tonopen
- Neutralizing glasses prescription
- Scribing/accurately documentation exam
- Assisting in minor surgeries if needed by MD
- Sterilizing instruments
- Cleaning, stocking, opening/closing of exam and work up rooms
- Maintaining clean work area and patient areas
- Helping and answering questions of other staff members
- Disposing of biohazard waste and sharps
- Using paper and electronic medical records systems
- Determining which patient should be next to be taken from the waiting room and to have testing initiated. Escort all patients from the waiting room for the data collection. Following testing, advise the patient as to who will see them next and make them comfortable during the wait.
- Maintaining a smooth flow of patients to the physician, altering the test sequence as required
- Communicating with coworkers to facilitate proper patient flow
- Checking calibration of equipment, performing quality checks, and make adjustments or calls for service as necessary
Skills and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- 2 years of Ophthalmology experience (preferred)
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (preferred)
- Excellent communication and customer service skills

Environmental/Working Conditions
Work is performed in a medical office. Involves frequent contact with the public, staff, and physicians. Work may be stressful at times. Work may involve exposure risk to communicable diseases. Contact will at times involve dealing with challenging situations and upset people. Possible exposure to chemical hazards.
Physical/Mental Demands
Work requires hand dexterity for office machine operation, stooping and bending to files and supplies, mobility to assist with moving patients, charts and objects throughout the office, at times sitting or standing for extended periods. Most possess visual and auditory acuity in order to communicate with co-workers, patients and other customer groups. Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
