About the Organization
Corner Shower and Laundry (CSL) is based out of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Detroit, which historically has served as a base for social justice advocacy, launching a variety of organizations and projects throughout the years that respond to the surrounding community’s needs. The initiative seeks to provide safe and clean shower and laundry facilities to homeless residents in the Corktown area of Detroit. Corner Shower and Laundry believes that providing these services will not only help to address the immediate health and hygiene concerns of homeless guests, but also that these services are necessary in improving the guests’ quality of life, sense of dignity, and ability to achieve personal and financial stability.

Corner Shower and Laundry operates four showers, three washing machines, and three dryers for a total of 25 hours per week, which allows the initiative to provide up to 1,600 showers to homeless guests per month, as well as wash and dry 730 loads of laundry.

Summary of the Position
The Operation Associate is a part time position that handles the programmatic operations of CSL.
They facilitate the shower use by guests and as needed, washing their clothes. The Associate open and close the facility daily, greet and assist guests as they enter the facilities, clean the shower after every shower, organize and maintain supplies, organize volunteer opportunities at the facilities for community members; document services and communicate and coordinate with social service agencies, especial Manna Meal Community Soup Kitchen.

Responsibilities
The Operations Associate reports to the Operations Committee chair of the of the Board. The position is essentially to help with the smooth running of the Corner Shower and Laundry.
Primary duties would include:

• Signing guests up for showers or laundry services, bringing them in from outside as needed.
• Organizing volunteers to assist in getting guests into the showers and assisting with laundry.
• Keeping the shower area and the rest of CSL clean and sanitary; mopping shower walls and floors between showers and keeping all floor areas clean.
• Properly operating the washers and dryers and ensuring that guest’s clothes are not lost or mixed with other guests.
• Getting clothes or other items for guests as needed from the supply area.
• Keeping the CSL and clothes areas neat and organized.
• Ensuring good record keeping as it relates to services being recorded on the sign in sheet or activity log into the online database.
• Providing donor with donation receipts.
• Scheduling, training, and supervising volunteers.
• Coordinate with the Administrative Associate.
• Other duties as instructed by the Operation Committee chair.

Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated track record of reliability, ability to follow instructions and ability to interact well with people from a diverse background. They will also possess the physical capacity and stamina needed to carry out the job requirements including lifting 30lb laundry soap, climbing stairs, and interacting with guests.

Previous life/work experience working with the homeless and/or mentally ill and veteran populations is a plus.

Work Schedule
7:00am to 12:00pm (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday)

These hours run parallel to Manna Meal Soup Kitchen that serves the same population. On rare occasion the position will require some evening for volunteer group time.

Position Details

Position Title*: Temporary Part Time Operations Associate

Salary: $18/hour – Part time (25 hours weekly)

*Position can change to permanent after 60 days learning period

Benefits: Paid time off and holidays (including most federal holidays, Good Friday, Friday after Thanksgiving and the winter break between December 24 and January 2). Part time positions do not medical, dental, vision and life insurance.

Required: Must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19, proof of vaccinations will be needed.

This job operates in the lower level of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church’s Social Justice Hive at 1950 Trumbull Ave, Detroit, MI 49216.
