Summary of Primary Functions

Provides for assistance of the physician during the surgical case, including gathering and preparing supplies/equipment for case. Supervises the Scrub Technician before, during and after a surgical case to ensure adherence to policies and procedures as well as standards of care. Ensures aseptic and sterile technique throughout procedure. Performs Circulating Nurse duties including set-up of case, prepping of patient, monitoring patient for local procedures, report to PACU and peri-operative care as outlined in AORN Standards and Center policy. Maintains cleanliness of room for turnover between cases, pulls instruments with damaged or improper function and notifies manager of needed replacement/repair. Responsible for the delivery of quality, professional perioperative nursing care of the patient in the operating room and the Center.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assesses patient preoperatively considering physical, psychosocial, behavior, cultural, educational and self-care criteria. Plans, implements and evaluates patients’ care during operative procedure based on assessment criteria. Performs therapeutic measures prescribed and delegated by physician. Completes documentation of the surgical procedure in an accurate and legible manner. Assumes responsibility for the direction of the surgical team. Enforces infection control and patient safety initiatives. Coordination of communication to team, anesthesia, surgeon and family members/significant others.
  • Assists in various duties including but not limited to pulling and opening needed supplies/instrumentation and medication for the procedure. Assisting in patient transport and positioning, gowning, equipment placement, participating in the time out, surgical counts etc.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining operating room/procedure room per policy and procedures. Assisting in other duties such as but not limited to turnover, patient transport, preparing specimens, assisting in other perioperative areas as directed by management etc.
  • Participates in the education/instruction and orientation of new staff.
  • Participates in performance improvement projects and performs quality control testing as required by facility; assists department in achieving successful results in all federal, state, and local agency audits.
  • Additional duties as assigned by management including but not limited to policy and procedure updates, accreditation readiness, safety drills, stocking and inventory checks, etc.

Employment Qualifications:

Education

  • Required Minimum Education: 2 Year/Associates Degree; Specialty/Major: Licensed Registered Nurse in the state of Ohio
  • Preferred Education: 4 year/Bachelors Degree; Specialty/Major: Nursing

Licensing/Certification

  • Required: Active Registered Nurse; BLS, ACLS, PALS within 3 months of hire
  • Preferred: BLS, ACLS, PALS, CNOR

Experience

  • Required: Minimum 2 years experience circulating
  • Preferred: Experience in an outpatient freestanding surgery center; Critical care experience; 3 years experience circulating
