Oncology Resource Advocate, Hematology/Oncology, Mercy Cedar Rapids Job at Mercy Medical Center - Cedar Rapids
This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by meeting with new patients to discuss insurance benefits and to gain understanding of patients’ financial concerns they may have while navigating a cancer diagnosis. Reviews health insurance benefits to determine copays, deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket costs patients may encounter. Supports patients in obtaining additional financial support when necessary. Responsible for gaining preauthorization to ensure medical necessity and addresses billing concerns including denials.
Job Duties

Communicates with social worker and dietitian when a resource is needed.

Backs up the front office when needed.

Meets with patients as needed to discuss insurance benefits and determine level of financial need.

Interacts with nursing staff, physicians, and other cancer center staff.

Acts as liaison between Hall-Perrine Cancer Center and Mercy billing staff.
Department Specific Duties
-
Performs pre-authorization duties requiring good knowledge of hospital-based programs and procedures.

Possesses a complete understanding of health insurance requirement for pre-authorization per payer.

Initiates an accurate and complete pre-authorization and makes required edits on pre-authorization as needed. Includes following up on missing pre-authorization information.

Follows necessary steps to ensure oral medication delivery to the patient following authorization.

Maintains records for the Hope Fund to include maintaining and ordering supply of gas vouchers.

Secures patient funding and submits for reimbursement through foundations and drug companies.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to use a computer, calculator, fax machine, document scanner and photocopier to complete responsibilities.

Knowledge of medical terminology strongly preferred.

Experience in collection of insurance information and registration.

Ability to perform multiple tasks with constant interruptions.

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
Professional Experience
-
Minimum of two years medical office or medical insurance office strongly preferred. Oncology office experience highly desired.

Previous financial advocacy or insurance experience preferred.

Pharmacy Technician experience preferred.

The department requires completion or willingness to complete ACCC Financial Boot Camp within 1 year of hire.
Education
-
High school diploma required.

Preferred: Associates degree, graduate of HIM program, RHIT or RHIA certification.
Licensure, Certification, Registration

None required, but must maintain any current licensure or certification.
Location: Mercy Medical Center - Cedar Rapids · Hematology/Oncology
Schedule: PRN, Day, Mon-Fri 8-5PM varying shifts
