POSITION SUMMARY
To provide daily hygiene, assist with ADL’s, and data collection in a timely and accurate manner. To communicate appropriately with patients, families, and all members of the health care team. To transcribe medical plan of care, maintain work environment and communicate nursing care needs in a timely and accurate manner. To assist in maintaining the safety of suicidal patients.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Formal Education / Training
- EMT or at least one year of patient care experience preferred
- High school diploma or equivalent
- BLS within 90 days of hire
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) initial certification within 90 days of hire; certification required biennially (every other year).
- Behavioral Health Patient Safety course for patient sitter within 90 days of hire; other as needed identified continual education courses required for behavioral health patient safety

Pocket Masks; Bed Scales; Sphygmomanometer; Dinamap; Electronic Thermometers; Plexipulse; K-Thermia; Pneumatic Tube System; Telemetry; Nurse Call System; Fax; Network Computer System.
Physical Environment:
Medical-Surgical and ER units with patient population ranging from less than one year of age>99 years of age.
Physical Effort:
- Able to communicate in English verbally and legibly.
- Able to sit/stand/work for up to twelve hours a day.
- Able to lift with assistance up to 250 lbs.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
- Assists with the patient’s care identifying and reporting problems/needs, and performs interventions consistent with identified problems as directed by the nurse.
- Coordinates with appropriate health care team members to help coordinate the delivery of patient care in a timely manner.
- Handles/transports medications/solutions safely and in accordance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures
- Assists with treatments, procedures and equipment to areas evidenced by adherence to policy, procedure and competency based assessment and no pattern or trend of problem
- Documents accurately and timely
- Obtains verbal report from the nurse to include information regarding the patient’s identified care needs as well as any special consideration (NPO, bed alarms, restraints)
- When sitting with a patient, positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient. Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse
- When sitting with a patient, is observant of the patient’s activity and behavior and communicates on a regular basis to the nurse. Receives direction from the nurse regarding what to report, to whom and how.
- When sitting with a patient, obtains instruction from the nurse regarding ambulation limitations and course of action for redirection of patient if needed
- Provides for patient comfort, safety and satisfaction. Maintains healing and therapeutic environment in a safe and orderly manner
- Demonstrates responsibility for assigned communications.
