Under the direct supervision of the MGH Transfusion Service Medical Director and with administrative reporting to the BTS technical director, evaluates and improves transfusion processes throughout the hospital (includes all inpatient and outpatient areas where transfusion is performed) and is accountable for designing, coordinating, and implementing programs for staff development, education, research, quality, and defining and implementing evidence-based practice. Reports to the Medical Director of the Blood Transfusion Service. Works in conjunction with the Transfusion Medicine medical staff, Quality and Safety, as well as Nursing leadership to establish, monitor and maintain safety protocols and procedures which comply with Hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
The Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) is responsible for the development of the Blood Management Program to assure that all transfusion-related activities are designed to ensure patient safety, comply with all Hospital Policies and Procedures, and meet or exceed DPH, TJC, FDA, AABB, and other accreditation and regulatory agency standards. The PBM program addresses the appropriate provision and use of blood components, and strategies to reduce/avoid the need for a blood transfusion with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes while reducing costs.
The TSO establishes processes to track, analyze, and audit key performance metrics and will offer recommendations to address areas of concern to improve safety and treatment efficacy and reduce costs. The TSO is responsible for promoting safe and effective transfusion therapy. The TSO is actively engaged in the improvement of transfusion safety outside of the Blood Bank laboratory through clinician education and active surveillance of the transfusion process (patient identification, blood administration, appropriate ordering practices, transfusion reactions, incidents, and near-misses), patient blood management (blood utilization review, minimization of perioperative blood loss, documentation review), quality improvement (transfusion guidelines development, transfusion committee or peer review participation, massive transfusion protocols). The TSO is a practitioner who serves as a critical link and clinical resource between the transfusion service and patient care team.
- Current registration in nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Licensed Registered Nurse in Massachusetts required
- Masters degree required; either Bachelors or Masters degree must be in nursing.
- Current certification required or to be attained within two-year period from date of hire. Certification must be maintained while employed in this position.
- Minimum five years of clinical experience as a clinical nurse with demonstrated evidence of leadership progression.
- Demonstrated evidence of competent nursing practice in clinical area or specialty.
- Clinical experience in both medical and surgical in-patient care units or similar situations in which transfusions occur required.
- Position requires circumspect problem-solving skills and good mathematical and spreadsheet capabilities including statistical analysis and graphical capabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, consensus building skills and a team approach required.
- Technical capabilities sufficient to comprehend laboratory operations needed.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross functional teams including staff at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to successfully negotiate and collaborate with others of different skill sets, backgrounds and levels within and external to the organization
- Strong problem solving and negotiation skills
- Ability to effectively conduct meetings, both formal and informal
- Requires minimal direction from leadership and possesses the ability to learn quickly
