The Public Library of Brookline is seeking a dynamic, innovative and creative technology professional to provide leadership and technical expertise in the selection, development, and implementation of library information technologies. Under the direction of the Library Director, the Network System Administrator will be responsible for the integration and maintenance of all automated systems and equipment, including software, hardware, technical support and training for staff and patrons; manages technical services and circulation operations; Work in consultation with the Town IT department and follow town-wide cybersecurity and other network requirements; performs all other related work as required.
The Public Library of Brookline, a member of the Minuteman Library Network, is a vital community center, with a main library and two branch libraries that boast some of the highest circulation numbers and innovative offerings in the State.
Qualifications:
BA/BS in computer science, management information systems, engineering or related field; five to seven years of experience in network operations, desktop and server support in a Windows Server enterprise environment; at least 3 years technical expertise with Active Directory; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Library technology infrastructure and automation systems experience desirable.

Network Systems Administrator (Library) Job Description
Position Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to provide leadership and technical expertise in the selection, development, and implementation of library information technologies. Responsible for the integration and maintenance of all automated systems and equipment, including software, and provides technical support to staff and patrons; manages technical services and circulation operations; Work in consultation with the Town IT department and follow town-wide cybersecurity and other network requirements; performs all other related work as required.
Essential Functions:

- Designs, administers, secures and maintains a computer network of 130 – 150 personal computers utilizing networking software and tools. Work with Town IT on library user ID management and security in Active Directory.
- Diagnoses equipment problems. Makes repairs or calls out for repairs as required. Communicates with vendors regarding computers, software, and applications.
- Projects and plans for future technology requirements in compliance with the IT department’s vendor security requirements. Makes recommendations to the Library Director. Selects and purchases hardware and software. Investigates new products to determine their potential usefulness within the library.
- Installs and configures hardware and software including terminals, scanners, printers, security software and filtering software.
- Instructs the staff in the use and basic maintenance of computer equipment and peripherals. Coordinates training of patrons in the use of library equipment.
- Manages software training for all staff; provides direct technology training for staff and the general public.
- Assists in the preparation of the library department budget. Manages capital and repair budget for library technologies.
- Acts as Minuteman Library Network Technical Coordinator, the primary liaison to the MLN Central Site for technical support for installation and maintenance of library automated systems equipment. Attends Key User meetings. Stays abreast of innovations in library technology. Integrates library LAN with the Town’s LAN/Intranet and Minuteman Library Network’s WAN.
- Prepares state-mandated three-year technology plan submitted to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
- Report to the Library Director, Board of Library Trustees and other professional organizations regarding the library’s technology operations.
- Serves as the library’s web master. Oversees and updates the library’s web page.
- Represents the library on various committees such as the Minuteman Library Network and Technology Committee.
- Coordinates other programs as assigned. Prepares necessary reports, maintains appropriate statistics and makes recommendations.
- Pursues opportunities for professional development. Maintains current knowledge of the field through attendance at conferences, seminars, etc. and by keeping current with literature in the field. Learns all new technology and software programs as well as upgrades in network technology.
- Works with administration in analyzing library’s present and future technology needs and makes recommendations for purchase of appropriate hardware and software. Participates in preparing departmental annual budget for technology needs.
- Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience:

Knowledge: Complete familiarity with automated library systems and related applications. Knowledge of HTML and web page design and administration. Knowledge in Active Directory. Proficiency in TCP/IP, DNS, WINS, DCHP and SFTP. Solid understanding of networking and distributed computing concepts, including the principles of network routing and client/server technology. Broad knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures related to telecommunications and information systems. Thorough knowledge of network management and vendor management. Knowledge and technical expertise of wireless communications, network security, voice and data networking systems. Expert knowledge of a variety of library systems and applications. Expert knowledge of a variety of operating systems. Expert knowledge of desktop computers, mobile devices and internet of things.
Ability: Proven ability to troubleshoot software, hardware, and telecommunications problems. Ability to evaluate technology options and plan for their current and future use and procurement. Ability to communicate effectively and instruct all levels of users within the library. Ability to deal with all members of the public, including children and young adults, in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to work with a high level of detail. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions. Ability to identify and to analyze complex issues and to develop appropriate recommendations. Ability to efficiently and effectively manage multiple projects at one time.

Supervision:
Supervision Scope: Performs varied and responsible duties of a technical nature requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative to independently perform duties, complete assigned tasks, supervise staff, and analyze the facts or circumstances surrounding individual problems. Independent action involves implementing and maintaining all computer systems; monitoring systems’ usage and practices. Instructs users in the proper use of their assigned systems; determines priorities and responds to user service requests based upon departmental policy.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the administrative direction of the Library Director. Employee generally establishes own work plan and completes work in accordance with established policies and standards; only cases involving clarification of library policies and procedures are referred to supervisor.
Supervision Given: Supervises inter-departmental technology projects. In the absence of the Library Director and Assistant Library Director for Administration, assumes management responsibility for the entire library system. May supervise Help Desk Technician.
Job Environment:
Work is performed under typical library conditions at multiple locations within the Town; the noise level is quiet to moderate at most times. Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Library operating hours may require evening and weekend work. Operates computers and peripherals, telephone, standard office and library equipment. Makes frequent contact with the library staff, Minuteman Library Network, Board of Library Trustees, IT department, other municipal departments, general public, and technical and/or computer vendor representatives. Contacts require a moderate level of persuasiveness, resourcefulness, and discretion to influence the decisions and behavior of others. Handles the more difficult customer service requests. Has access to confidential information including personnel records and information stored on the computer system. Manages the library’s technology infrastructure in conjunction with the IT department for cyber security and the Building department for the building security system, cameras, and key cards. Errors could result in reduced levels of service, monetary loss, and significant damage to library resources.
