Position Title
Network Support Specialist I or II

Job Responsibilities
The Network Support Specialist position provides support and service activities for the information technology endeavors needed to facilitate the educational process at Truman State University.
Typical work responsibilities include support for the campus information infrastructure, including installation, configuration, and maintenance of infrastructure components including but not limited to: data, network, telephone and cable TV cabling; Maintain appropriate documentation of technical services; Determine cause of infrastructure malfunctions and resolve issues using appropriate solutions; Provide technical support of infrastructure services to academic, administrative and student areas; Manage student labor (if provided); and Take an active role in meeting customer needs.

Required Qualifications
Minimum required qualifications:
  • The Network Support Specialist I will have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • The Network Support Specialist II will have an Associate’s degree in computer science or a closely related field OR two years of related work experience demonstrating technical knowledge, OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.


Both positions require:
  • Experience in general construction techniques; using hand tools, installing wiring, drywall, etc.
  • Experience that demonstrates strong organizational skills.
  • Experience that demonstrates strong teamwork/group participation skills.
  • Experience using Windows operating systems and the Microsoft Office suite
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of physical network, phone, television and fiber optic systems. Can provide an overview of how systems are built, connected, and maintained. Knowledgeable of EIA/TIA wiring closet and cabling standards.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of data networking and IP networking. Can provide an overview of how layer two and layer three switching occurs, how IP traffic is routed and systems such as wireless access points, routers, bridges and firewalls function.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of basic system administration concepts. Can explain the client server model and how client to server communication would route across the physical infrastructure.

The Network Support Specialist II also requires:
  • Knowledge of structured wiring standards, installation methods and best practices as described in the TIA/EIA 568-B/C standards
  • Experience doing project or job accounting/billing.
  • Experience installing and maintaining network wiring.
  • Experience installing and maintaining telephone wiring and telephone services.
  • Experience installing and maintaining cable TV cabling and cable TV services.
  • Experience maintaining network services, network equipment including layer one through layer three network support.
  • Experience installing and maintaining wireless networks.
  • Experience in designing structured wiring systems.
  • Experience in fiber optic cable installation and maintenance.
  • Experience working with equipment vendors and suppliers.
  • Project management experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications:
  • Certifications in structured wiring systems.
  • Certifications in fiber optic cabling.
  • Experience installing and maintaining network equipment (switches, routers, etc.)
  • Experience installing and maintaining Cisco network equipment and wireless networks.
  • Ability to program in an administrative language (Perl, Python, Ruby, Bash, VBScript, PowerShell).
  • Experience with Apple Mac operating systems.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
  • Experience with Open Source software such as Apache and MySQL.
  • Experience reviewing and evaluating technology equipment
  • Experience working with equipment vendors and suppliers
  • RFP development experience
  • Experience managing other workers
