Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary
Provide support for the wireless networks at the four campus locations and any additional locations where the university has wireless equipment deployed. Work with the entire integrated network team to ensure seamless and efficient wireless services to end users and devices.

The home campus for this position is Bloomsburg,with the expectation of serving a multi-campus University within the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

This position may be eligible for telecommuting with requisite approval. Per PASSHE Telecommuting Procedure 2021-51, an alternate work site is defined as an approved work site within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, other than the employee’s assigned permanent work location, designated for telecommuting.

Essential Duties
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of network communications
  • Knowledge of industry standards and protocols, concepts, and best practices of network communications systems
  • Knowledge of the functions and capabilities of network hardware and software in a network environment
  • Knowledge of the processes and procedures involved in the installation and configuration of network hardware and software in a network environment
  • Knowledge of the process of installing and configuring hardware and software on desktop computers and peripherals
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques in a network environment on switches, routers, and common end-nodes such desktops, laptops, printers, on-line Laundromat, vending machines, soda machines, wireless access points, IP-phones, on-line security access control locks, energy management modules, networked security cameras, networked point-of-sale registers
  • Knowledge of network security industry standards and best practices on switches & routers
  • Knowledge of physical cabling and wiring specifications for a structured wiring environment, certification of basic/channel links, installation practices, 110 punch-down, RJ45 termination, wiring standards for Cat6, 568B, 568A
  • Knowledge of fiber in a plenum/non-plenum environment, FC/ST/SC/LC terminations, MM/SM, mode-conditioning, length
  • In depth knowledge of current and upcoming wireless networking standards including the entire 802.11 family.
  • Knowledge of RF link planning, frequency coordination and interference mitigation.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical computer manuals, procedures, and specifications
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

Specific Duties
  • This position is responsible for the wireless network presence across the entire university environment. It includes a network presence at 3 main university campuses, one branch campus and several additional satellite locations. It’s the responsibility of this position to move equipment, tools, cabling, and ladders as required to perform any and all work of the job duties.
  • Configure, install, maintain, and upgrade all wireless network access points and controller hardware and software. Ensure that a seamless end-user experience is presented regardless of the location or equipment deployed (Cisco, Aruba, etc).
  • Work with the integrated network and security teams to ensure that the wireless network is properly integrated with network access control products such as Cisco Identity Services Engine or Aruba Clearpass.
  • Continually conduct audits of the performance of the wireless network to ensure that not only is coverage extended to all areas of need, but also that adequate capacity is deployed.
  • Work with the integrated network team and the facilities/construction department to design, place and deploy access points in new construction and renovation projects.
  • Utilize Ekahau or similar survey software to do wireless network site survey and design activities.
  • Work to ensure that the wireless network integrates holistically with the rest of the university network from an architecture and security standpoint. Ensure that all network policies are enforced on the wireless network.
  • Coordinate, install and maintain any and all outdoor wireless point-to-point links to have adequate capacity for their intended purpose.
  • Maintain complete and current documentation of all aspects of the wireless network.
  • This job responsibility requires absolute attention to detail, correctness, documentation, and clear communication among all involved parties for the single objective of reliable network communications.
  • This is not a comprehensive listing of job duties and responsibilities but in general is a fairly representative listing of primary task activities and the responsibilities of this position. In addition, this network support position is regularly asked to perform job related duties as necessary or by direction of members of IT administrative management staff.
  • This position may require frequent travel between university campus locations and occasional travel to other non-campus locations.
  • This position works with a minimum of supervision. All work is performed independently using initiative and judgment. Major assignments and work priorities are made through the immediate administrative manager and are received verbally or through email. Additional assignments and work priorities are received from administrative managers of other IT departments in the same manner with the understanding that the immediate administrative manager has the final decision in cases of conflicting time or resources. Additional work assignments can come from other campus divisions and/or outside vendors and are typically subject to the review of the immediate administrative manager to establish scope of project, funding model, and scheduling/priority as required.

Minimum Qualifications (Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
One year of experience as a Network Specialist 1;
OR
Two years of information technology experience that includes one year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance, and an associate’s degree in any information technology field;
OR
Four years of information technology experience that includes one year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance;
OR
An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of technical experience in network operation or network maintenance.
