Role Overview:
The microfluidic engineer will participate in research and development of microfluidic technology through the advancement of science-based knowledge. The candidate will investigate and explore new ideas and concepts, design, build and test microfluidic devices, and deliver innovation to improve animal genetics. As a member of the R&D team, there will be frequent, multi-disciplinary team collaboration with engineers, biologists, and production.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and assemble research platforms to understand complex scientific concepts
- Work collaboratively with the science and engineering teams to generate prototypes and achieve proof of concept
- Source components and build prototypes quickly
- Manage internal and external resources including vendors
- Manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively with limited oversight
- Develop experimental plans that can be carried out individually or with a team
- Assist Technicians and other Engineers with development and troubleshooting
- Maintain design for manufacture, validation and verification of new/changes to microfluidic architecture
- Participate in development of patent applications
- Design and conduct experiments to evaluate microfluidic chip performance and iterate chip design through literature review, fundamental simulation/modeling, and experimental testing
- Assist in defining system specifications & requirements and work with the engineering team to implement the system
- Perform other routine job duties as needed
Minimal:
- Bachelor’s degree in Math, Engineering, Physics, or related program with 3+ years of experience, or Masters degree with 1+ years of experience. Experience should be in microfluidic research and application in an academic or industrial setting
- Experience in cell separation, particle fractionation, or colloidal rheology
- Strong knowledge in fluidic dynamics, fluidic kinetics, and surface property of materials
- Ability to conduct detailed simulations and particle flow analysis within COMSOL or other CFD packages
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or other CAD software
- Ability to effectively communicate results and their impact on a systems level in a multidisciplinary environment
- Ability to work with minimal guidance to make decisions and report progress
- Strong attention to detail and respect for quality assurance
- Maintain accurate experimental records and perform data analysis on results
- Demonstrated experience in developing and prototyping microfluidic device for particle/cell manipulation
- Ability to handle biological samples
- Ability to work closely with other team members to lead scientific project deliverables and drive microfluidic chip development and testing, design of experiment, execution, and result analysis and report
- Ability and desire to learn new skills/knowledge
Preferred:
- PhD degree in Math, Engineering, Physics, or related program
- Advanced knowledge of flow cytometry
- A solid understanding of inertial microfluidic physics for particle/cell manipulation, such as inertial migration, separation, focusing or ordering, experience in hydrodynamic cell separation or focusing is a plus
- Strong knowledge to leverage inertial fluid mechanics to control particles and fluids within inertial microfluidic chips based on different channel geometries ranging from straight channel, curved channel to contraction-expansion-array channel, etc.
- Hands-on experience with sample preparation, fluidic handling, control system, and integration microfluidic chip with fluidic systems, or instrumentation
- Knowledge of cell culture, IVF and embryology
- Experience in building devices for sample preparation, concentration, purification, liquid handling, and bio detection
- Experience in modeling and characterizing non-spherical colloids in Newtonian and Non-Newtonian flows through microfluidic devices
