Summary:
The Metallographer position is responsible for performing routine metallurgical testing such as microhardness, grain size, micro cleanliness, ferrite, and decarburization. They are also responsible for performing non-routine and non-standard testing and may also be involved of the development and refinement of test methods. They will also assist in the preparation of metal specimens for the testing of metallurgical properties, as needed. Position reports to the Lab Manager.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain proper identification of test samples
- Test and analyze samples for metallurgical characteristics using Metallography and Microscopy
- Operate saws
- Grind, polish, and etch test specimens
- Operate lab equipment necessary for testing samples
- Prepare samples
- Prepare reports to communicate test results
- Assist Technology with development/refinement of testing for new products
- Assist Technology with failure analysis
- Analyze and interpret test results
- Ordering and maintaining metallurgical supplies and consumables
- Scheduling repairs and calibrations of test equipment
- Performs and documents validation records
- Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned
- Working knowledge of metallurgical principles, standards, methods and practices
- Working knowledge of metallurgical/laboratory equipment
Skills:
- Ability to operate saws, polishing equipment, and metallurgical test equipment
- Good organizational skills required
- Attention to detail
- Ability to follow instructions
- Fluent in Microsoft Office
- Familiarity with steel manufacturing process, testing requirements and specifications
- Ability to multi-task
- Previous Metallography experience preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Experience:
- 2 Years of relevant experience
- Proficient and knowledgeable with regards to sample preparation and polishing techniques
- Knowledge and experience using metallurgical testing equipment
- Experience with imaging systems, automated systems a plus
- Previous experience in a testing lab with Ferrous materials highly desirable
Education:
- High School Graduate
- AA or BS degree in Metallurgical Technology or materials-related field
