With 200+ full-time staff, most of whom live in or near its service communities, Centers provides programs in seven locations throughout the Bronzeville and Riverdale communities of Chicago's Southside that reach over 1,000 individuals daily
Position Description
A Mentor with the Centers for New Horizon is a caring, responsible, adult who serves as a trusted friend and guide to a student from one of Chicago’s traditional or charter public high schools. S/he helps to ensure that the student develops important academic and life skills, is exposed to new opportunities and a wide array of resources, makes positive life choices, stays in school, and graduates with a plan for pursuing post-secondary education.
Essential Functions
Associate's degree in Education, Social Work or a closely related field from an accredited college preferred or a combination of college course work and related previous work experience, preferably in a nonprofit agency

Essential Functions
- Commit to spending at least one year in a relationship with a student mentee.
- Spend at least five - eight hours a month engaged in a mutually agreed-upon activity with their student mentees
- Communicate with their mentees weekly—by telephone or email—to keep in touch about what is going on in their lives.
- Honor all commitments made to the mentees and Centers for New Horizons.
- Be respectful of the student mentees time, opinions, and decision-making.
- Serve as a positive role model by modeling desirable behaviors—e.g. patience, tolerance, and reflective listening.
- Establish appropriate boundaries with the mentee and his or her family.
- Act as an encouragement and supportive resource to the mentees.
- Help the protégé develop a milestone plan for completing high school and going onto college or work.
- Check-in with the program staff once a week.
- Attend on-going trainings when needed or requested to do so by program manager.
- Complete evaluation surveys as requested by staff.
- Facilitate programming at three separate MMI program locations
- Report and update program status in city span system.
- Transport program equipment to and from program locations.
- Recognize role as a mandated reporter and report any problematic issues.
- Be patient and understand the mentoring relationship is a process that takes work and time.

Essential Responsibilities
- Attend regularly; dependable coming to work as scheduled
- Report absences within department procedures
- Attend and participate in required meetings (i.e., all-agency meetings, department/program meetings, supervisor meetings, etc.)
- Successfully complete all in-service training required for the position within timelines and participate in other training, as assigned
- Manage work time to meet needs of internal and external customers, stakeholders and individuals receiving services
- Expands knowledge of departmental/agency operations
- Participates in performance review and personal/professional growth
- Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling and punctuation.
- Thorough knowledge of customer service, office practices, procedures and equipment.
- Proficient in Microsoft word, Excel, Access, Power Point and other computer software packages.
- Knowledge of various population contracts
- Ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and over the phone.
- Must be able to work in and independent manner.
- Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; good time-management, problem-prevention, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work accurately with close attention to detail.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Flexible and creative. Patience and compassion for consumers.
- Ability to work with co-workers, customers, and outside agencies professionally and tactfully while exhibiting a professional, businesslike appearance and demeanor.
