Mental Health Coordinator Job at GS1 Consulting
The purpose of this position is to increase mental health literacy among state partners and to develop a well-coordinated mental health care program for Indiana to address mental health needs amongst ORR-eligible populations. This position will be located in the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) Epidemiology Resource Center’s Refugee & International Health program and will report to the Refugee & international Health Coordinator. Essential Duties/Responsibilities: - Identify & conduct outreach to mainstream mental health providers versed in trauma-informed services to determine potential partners for helping refugee & immigrant population - Develop a refugee mental health training curriculum for mainstream providers - Increase the pool of Mental Health First Aid (MFHA) instructors in the resettlement network - Conduct awareness and education for the refugee & immigrant population on mental health & emotional wellness - Work with the refugee & immigrant population to decrease stigma about mental health and encourage them to seek, and to use availabe mental support services in the community - Develop direct linkages between mental health service providers and refugee & immigrant services providers to ensure a well-coordinated referral process - Develop and implement strategies to mitigate language barriers to mental health services for the refugee & immigrant populations - Identfy community-based mental health support activities, such as wellness group, Meditation groups, Women's sewing group, etc. and connect them with refugee & immigrant population - Work with resettlement agencies to development menthal health promotion activities for the refugee & immigrant population - Attend community based activities, meetings, and coalitions to advocate for mental health support and services for refugee & immigrant population Job Requirements: Education: - Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences, health education, Psychology, psychiatry, or socials sciences) and = 2 years’ relevant public health experience, OR - Graduate or professional degree in a health-related field (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, RS) OR - Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and = 5 years of relevant public health experience Knowledge, skills, and abilities: - Knowledge of mental health dimensions, causes and best practice mental health education - Knowledge of state, federal laws, regulations & guidance documents pertaining to mental health - Skill in identification of mental health problems pertinent to the refugee population - Skill in communication, interpersonal relationship, cultural competency -Ability to work efficiently and independently with minimal supervision - Strong critical and analytical thinking skills - Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: N/A. Difficulty of Work: The scope of the work is broad involving develoment and/or improving new or existing protocosl & tools to educate and promote mental health among ORR-eligible population. Guidelines are established, but the work requires broad interpretation and judgment in its application and implementation. Work also requires consideration of many factors, including culture, origin, race, ethniciyt and language barriers among the target population. Responsibility: Work involves implementing and evaluating program activities that support the Indiana Refugee Health Program.This work supports the IDOH mission, the IDOH strategic plan, and the Indiana State Health Improvement Plan Personal Work Relationships: The Mental Health Outreach Coordinator works with agency staff and external stakeholders including local public health departments, refugee resettlement agencies, refugee screening clinics, Family and Social Services Administration, and other health professionals. Incumbent must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust and collaboration between agencies and individuals with diverse and competing interests Physical Effort: Must sit for extended periods of time working on computer. Possible extended periods of driving time (up to three hours one way, cross-state) are required for within state travel. Occasional lifting and carrying (up to 50 lbs.) is possible for displays at health fairs Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a teammate encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
