We have a wonderful opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Education Specialist to join our Medical Exec. V.P. Office at Bloodworks Northwest. The incumbent will be the primary point person, educator, and coordinator for technical training programs at and associated with Bloodworks, outside of department-specific training. The primary liaison with internal groups such as organizational training and volunteer resources when laboratory education is desired. The incumbent in this position will use their time in between training events to help with department-specific requests for an additional technical trainer, and assistance with vendor sponsored trials of new laboratory equipment and reagents. Develop and conduct technical training and formal Immunohematology education and clinical instruction for the institutions and affiliated educational programs supported by Bloodworks as needed.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible in assisting the Chief Medical Officer in medical education efforts, such as CME credits, and projects.
  • Coordinate Medical Technology (MT) and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) education and training with local and regional institutions and on-line programs as needed.
  • Coordinate interdepartmentally to develop training schedules and resources to meet educational requests of trainees.
  • Develop clinical rotation focused on incorporating the trainee into the daily work.
  • Organize clinical experiences for students outside of Bloodworks who need to fulfill clinical requirements of on-line programs. Be the TSL immunohematology trainer for these students.
  • Maintain affiliation agreements under the direction of Chief Medical Officer.
  • Actively participate in the training and logistics of the above programs, including preparation of samples, grading of paperwork, and delivery of educational content.
  • Work closely with the program directors for the MT and MLT programs to improve classes and ensure maintenance of accreditation pertaining to Transfusion medicine.
  • Participate in interviewing and hiring of part time lab assistants as required for the programs.
  • Trend success of trainees on certification examinations and tailor training to address deficiencies.
  • Create new curriculum and delivery modes for upcoming MLT programs.
  • Create website information on the prerequisites and application process for rotations in departments at Bloodworks.
  • Under direction of Bloodworks physicians, provide educational experiences to medical trainees in Transfusion Service, including visiting fellows, residents, and students as needed when departmental resources cannot accommodate requests.
  • Based on the objectives provided by the Bloodworks physician, define appropriate curriculum and rotational requirements.
  • Deliver classroom education as requested by Bloodworks physicians, including the laboratory portion of the course.
  • As needed, assist administrative rotation scheduler in coordinating resources with management in departments.
  • Evaluate the current training plans for trainees and make suggestions for improvement.
  • As needed, assist with conference management and event planning, such as for Symposia and the Regional Education Meeting.
  • Be the point person to facilitate the request for Bloodworks speakers from outside groups and organizations, such as regional laboratory conferences. Help keep speakers on track with submission deadlines.
  • Work closely with Organizational training and Volunteer resources to evaluate requests for tours, etc of Bloodworks. For example, high school groups wanting to understand more about the process of blood donation and the job requirements of the staff, from phlebotomist through to Immunohematology reference technologist.
  • Evaluate requests from high school, college, and graduate students requesting internships with Bloodworks; coordinate schedules and serve as primary mentor/supervisor when the rotation is more technical in nature.
  • Be available for occasional time on weekends when opportunities arise to highlight work at Bloodworks (job fairs, Pacific Science Center initiatives, etc).
  • Facilitate and manage Adverse Event completion, while effectively collaborating with organization-wide departments on reporting data.
Technical specialist duties:
  • Participate in helping technical departments on a short term basis when more technical capacity is needed for a given project.
  • Maintain Human Subjects Research training to be able to participate in specific vendor-sponsored trials.
  • Assist in completion of vendor sponsored trials (Donor Testing, Transfusion Service, possibly other laboratories):
  • Be available for training sessions with vendor or a Bloodworks trainer.
  • Understand and follow all SOPs and protocols associated with the trial.
  • Understand and follow complete documentation practices required for submission of data to the FDA.
  • Work with other technologists to complete the trial on time and on budget.
  • As needed, provide temporary support as a technical training for department-specific needs (predominantly Transfusion service laboratory). May require local travel to a BWNW TSL site.
  • Add technical capacity when immediate needs of the organization change (eg, intake of blood donors being recruited for an NIH trial at the onsite of the COVID-19 pandemic).
  • Facilitate policy and/or Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) revision as needed.
  • Communicate information and ideas effectively to different audiences at all levels of the organization.
  • Adhere to department and division budget.
  • Comply with all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) as written.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical laboratory science or other biological science.
  • Must qualify as Testing Personnel, High Complexity Testing, under CLIA personnel requirements found in Subpart M of the Code of Federal Regulations.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in project management capacity including all aspects of project planning and execution, 5 years is preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years immunohematology laboratory experience.
  • Two years’ experience in teaching adult education at the bachelor medical technology level or equivalent.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification and LEAN experience is preferred.
  • Laboratory certification of Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Specialist Blood Banking (SBB) certification strongly preferred.
SPECIFIC JOB SKILLS include, but are not limited to:
  • Experience in writing and managing web content, and other social (existing or emerging) media content is preferred.
  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects/priorities to achieve program goals.
  • Report writing skills preferred, knowledge of Crystal reports is advantageous.
  • Ability to prioritize work load, meet deadlines, and produce results.
  • Ability to work under stress and handle interaction with all levels of the organization and the community.
  • Analytical skills to recognize problems, make recommendations and, in some cases, independently resolve and implement solutions and evaluate results and progress.
  • Quantitative skills to be able to convert data into user-friendly reports and presentations.
  • Required physical activities include continuous sitting, talking, reaching, and hearing. Required physical activities used less frequently include handling (used frequently); and stooping (used rarely).
  • The ability to push, pull and lift an average of 15 pounds throughout the day is required, as is the ability to carry an average of 15 pounds throughout the day.

  • Telecommuting ability is a frequent condition of this role.
