Mechanic – Shop Assistant (Small Engine, Fleet, and Diesel)


Qualifications & Job Description


The Mechanic’s principal responsibility is to maintain the fleet of trucks, heavy equipment, and small engine equipment of a region or division of the company. He performs mechanical repair duties and supervises other mechanics, shop assistant, or temporary seasonal support made available to him from time to time. The Mechanic must have strong communication and technical skills. Above all the Mechanic follows all safety policies and that the fleet is maintained in safe working condition.


This position report to a Chief Mechanic or Fleet Supervisor and may also take direction from a Senior Operations Manager or Director.

Trade Skill Requirements

  • Complete scheduled repairs in a safe, professional, and technically correct manner
  • Follows all safety policies and procedures
  • Drive company vehicles as directed
  • Operate various types of equipment and machinery associated with this job description
  • Is a journeyman in one or more of the following job sub-categories:
    • Small Engine Maintenance
    • Automotive Repairs
    • Diesel Repairs
    • ASE Certified
  • Performs other assigned tasks related to the maintenance of the fleet and equipment
  • Winter Season Operations
    • Plow snow using trucks or loaders (as needed)
    • Apply salt and other de-icing agents to paved surfaces (as needed)
    • Assist with post-storm cleanup and restocking (as needed)

Equipment Management

  • Professionally represents East Coast Facilities, Inc. at all times
  • Able to communicate adequately with providers and follow up to ensure company assets are in good repair
  • Maintains a positive, responsive, and flexible attitude to all the needs of the field
  • Inspects the equipment and notifies the Chief Mechanic or Fleet Supervisor of potential liabilities
  • Performs repairs to achieve maximum reliability
  • Inspects machines, engines, transmissions, etc. and performs diagnostics to discover any functionality problems
  • Diagnoses and resolves problems within a reasonable time frame
  • Can carry out other assigned tasks (i.e., hydraulic system repairs, painting of vehicles, etc.)
  • Ensures all assigned equipment, tools, safety items, vehicles & trailers or other items are maintained in proper working order by following proper maintenance and inventory schedules
  • Can identify neglect and abuse of assigned equipment. Must communicate these findings with to the Chief Mechanic or Fleet Supervisor.


Safety Management

  • Always maintains and promotes safe working conditions in the field
  • Follows company procedures on discipline if any safety rules are broken
  • Have zero preventable accidents

Training (when applicable)

  • Supports training efforts to field personnel in areas of fleet maintenance and operation

Image Compliance

  • Maintains clean, neat, and professional image of service vehicle & trailer

Administrative

  • Able to read and write
    • Equipment Repair/Request
    • Monthly Vehicle Safety Inspection
    • As applicable - Trailer Safety Inspection Form

General Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a mechanic (3 years or more)
  • Able to operate a smartphone, send and receive emails, take digital photos
  • Able to speak, read and write fluently in either Spanish or English
  • Have and hold a clean driver’s license
  • Can pass a drug test
  • Can pass a criminal background check
  • Comply with business ethics, applicable laws, and regulation
  • Maintain confidentiality of proprietary information

Work Environment/Physical Requirements

  • Work in/or about situations near direct automotive traffic
  • Work near or about natural bodies of water
  • Work with various types of work lifts
  • Able to work reasonable overtime or extended shifts if required by Management
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions – working temperatures may be between 0- and 95-degrees Fahrenheit
  • Ability to work in direct sunlight for extended periods
  • Ability to work in extreme cold or wintry precipitation
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop and twist continuously throughout the day
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned
