Title: CalWORKs Counselor
Classification: Full-time; Exempt - Temporary 4 months
Department: CalWORKs Behavioral Health Program
Reports To: CalWORKs Program Director
Location: Orange, CA
Mariposa CalWORKs Behavioral Health Services Counselors provide culturally competent outpatient behavioral health services and psycho-education to participants of the Orange County Social Services Agency California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids Program (CalWORKs), the county’s welfare-to-work program service families with dependent children. Mariposa’s CalWORKs program aims to increase the family’s capacity for self-sufficiency by offering time-limited interventions and support to reduce and/or overcome identified barriers to employment.
Essential Duties include, but not limited to:
- Provide culturally competent behavioral health services, including individual short-term counseling/therapy and case management services, and as needed, conduct crisis intervention and collateral meetings, to remove behavioral health barriers to work participation and employment
- Conduct intakes and comprehensive initial risk assessments of clients, including a clinical analysis of the history and current status in relation to bio-psycho-social-cultural, risk factors, substance use/abuse/dependence, vocational experience, family issues and other information.
- Facilitate/conduct group counseling/therapy sessions utilizing various modalities; process-oriented, curriculum-based, and/or psycho-educational, with various topics such as symptom management, stress management, relationship management, wellness recovery, parenting skills, and skills building
- Provide psycho-educational groups, and services to promote client’s employability and success in a work environment; provide one-on-one individual sessions, as needed
- Refer and transition clients to the appropriate services and departments, as needed based on clients’ needs and conditions
- Participate in and facilitate various client outreach activities to further support intensive engagement and retention in CalWORKs program services
- Collaborate in roundtable sessions and closely coordinate with treatment team members, staff, and other care/community providers, as well as the client, in the planning of the individual’s treatment & care, goal development and progress, vocational assessment & rehabilitation, case conferencing, participant progress and improvement, discharge planning, and other services as indicated
- Provide consultation to SSA staff concerning including assessment of barriers to employment.
- Provide frequent (weekly, monthly, or as agreed-upon) on-going contact with SSA staff service providers regarding client needs & progress, in order to monitor and determine effectiveness of service provision
- Develop and maintain clear, open, timely, cooperative, and diplomatic communications and working relations with all staff, consumers, and partner agencies
- Complete and maintain timely administrative and treatment records and documentation related to client care, in accordance to standards specified by Mariposa policies, clinical standards, and oversight agencies (e.g. Orange County Health Care Agency, CalWORKs, etc.)
- Participate in case conferences, treatment team and staff meetings, in-service trainings and other staff development activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Reports to: Program Administrator, Program Director
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATION
- Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Registered with the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) or Board of Psychology (BOP) and maintain good standing with the BBS or BOP during employment.
- Education, training and/or work experience in the field of alcoholism/ addictive disorders and women’s issues.
- Minimum of one-year related work experience conducting individual and group counseling sessions.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize effectively which includes crisis response and a capacity to manage time well.
- Ability to work independently and with others while maintaining a high level of ethical and professional practice in accordance with agency and community policy.
- Ability to facilitate diverse groups through structured sessions effectively.
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work environment.
- Ability to assess crisis situations, provide intervention and referrals, and perform counseling/case management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication required.
- Above average computer skills (basic knowledge of Microsoft WORD, Excel and Outlook) and data/electronic records program in use.
- Minimum 2 years sobriety if recovering alcoholic/drug addict
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Position is subject to background clearance including Live Scan.
CPR certificate and TB test required.
Salary Range: Generally starting at $31 - $33 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.
