Job Summary :

The Professional Development and Training Manager is responsible for litigation training and development at Ropes & Gray. Working with the Global Director of Professional Development and Training and other team members, the litigation manager develops, implements and evaluates high-quality attorney training programs. The manager is responsible for creating and managing a comprehensive training curriculum for the litigation department and its practice groups. Responsibilities also include implementing firmwide programs. The manager is supported by the Professional Development and Training Coordinator (Litigation/Corporate) and manages the Professional Development and Training Executive Assistant.

Essential Functions :

  • Helps develop lawyers to be the best possible litigators, and create a culture where lawyers learn from each other and share knowledge.
  • Creates, develops and implements litigation attorney training and development programs geared to helping lawyers succeed. Aligns training with the goals, needs and strategy of the firm. Partners with other groups on content.
  • Supports leadership of the litigation department and the department's training committee. Oversees the training committee's initiatives, meetings and agenda.
  • Manages the curriculum of the litigation department and its practice groups to maximize quality and effectiveness. Conducts needs analysis and designs curriculum. Ensures the efficient delivery of training and manages the coordination of programs.
  • Manages and develops a cohesive team, including the Professional Development and Training Coordinator and the Professional Development and Training Executive Assistant.
  • Manages the litigation training camp for new associates, including designing curriculum, developing a budget, managing logistics and prepping speakers. Keeps within budget.
  • With the Director and other PD managers as appropriate, develops and implements firmwide orientations and retreats.
  • Partnering with the Office of the General Counsel, implements firmwide ethics and risk management training.
  • Works with internal presenters and external consultants to deliver effective training.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in the law firm training and development field and current developments in adult learning principles.
  • Assesses, measures and reports training results. Improves training over time.
  • Teams with the other professional development managers.
  • Develops and manages the litigation training budget.
  • Acts as liaison with Practising Law Institute (PLI); manages communications to attorneys about PLI.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned, including integrating training with the associate development program, writing professional development department materials, creating training brochures, etc.

Education, Experience and Skills Required :

Advanced degree in a related field preferred, including but not limited to, a J.D. or an advanced degree in professional development/training or organizational development. Four years experience in large law firm professional development environment. Must possess a thorough knowledge of professional development programs, needs analysis, program evaluation and adult learning principles.

Working Conditions :

Normal office environment. Incumbent is expected to work the hours necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Incumbent is expected to travel among the firm's offices as needed.
