Position Summary:

Manager of LRC, a unit under Department of Educational Programs, McGovern Medical School at UTHealth is responsible for provision of facilities, services, resources and spaces for students’ individual and collaborative study and faculty facilitators’ small group interactive teaching and learning sessions. Incumbent oversees admin, fiscal and 24/7 access, IT infrastructures and works closely with Vice Dean of Educational Programs on key tasks, new initiatives, renovation projects and future LRC and Student Lounge satellites at various clinical teaching sites with which the medical school has an affiliation.

The LRC supports the teaching and learning functions of the faculty, staff, and students of McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and provides a well-furnished physical space for the students to study independently, or in a group, 24 hours a day both in the Medical School Building and at LBJ Hospital. The LRC promotes the utilization of innovative instructional resources and helps students search online medical literature and cultivates in them life-long study strategies.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  • Develops, implements and monitors best practices, policies and procedures for efficient functioning of LRC operations at two sites in medical school building and one at LBJ Hospital.
  • Maintains furnishings, equipment and fixtures in individual and collaborative study spaces, study rooms, art gallery, printers and copiers, circulation desk, staff and storage facilities.
  • Ensures 24/7 access for medical students, safeguarding their comfort and safety; authorizes periodic access to others, including faculty and staff, assigned to conduct time framed instructional activity.
  • Maintains, reviews and reports data on traffic in and out of LRC, anticipates peak workloads and assigns staff at Circulation Desk during normal open hours and in evenings and weekends.
  • Supports operations of Student Lounge in medical school and LBJ Hospital with other stakeholders; ensures 24/7 controlled access for medical students only, upkeeps furnishings and equipment in these facilities.
  • Monitors and updates LRC website, highlighting functions, services, staff contacts and new developments.
  • Appoints and seeks feedback from LRC Student Advisory Committee on operations and welcomes recommendations for further improvements.
  • Contributes to Educational Program’s biannual student satisfaction survey on study spaces, instructional technology and usage of library facilities; analyzes the same and makes recommendations for further improvements.
  • Oversees fiscal duties, prepares and monitors budgets, reviews and submits purchase requisitions for approval, reviews, reconciles and validates monthly financial reports.
  • Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports in regards to: recruiting and selection; hiring and termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning.
  • Makes case for filing vacancies and helps with recruitment; anticipates need for and justify recruitment of additional staff; filling vacancies (if any), helps fills such vacancies and makes for recruitment of additional staff as workload evolves and new initiatives and priorities become evident and recruitment of part-time Student Assistants to perform circulation desk tasks during peak hours, extended hours during evenings and weekends and monitors their performance.
  • Responsible for the design, execution and effectiveness of a system of internal controls which provides reasonable assurance that operations are effective and efficient, assets are safeguarded; financial information is reliable and compliant with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Works closely with MSIT staff, housed in LRC, who (a) provides centralized IT support to students, maintains their hardware and software configurations compatible with UTHeath standards. (b) maintains large inventory of computer devices in LRC. (c) helps place orders for leasehold computer devices and (d) maintains comprehensive inventory records of computer devices.
  • Becomes aware of innovative instructional resources which may complement curricular offerings and disseminates to faculty and course directors.
  • Works with TMC Library on requests for acquisition of new resources for possible inclusion in their collections.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively, preferably in health science academic setting

Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills

Ability to work independently and set priorities

Familiarity with digital teaching-learning resources, including medical resource databases and e-book collections preferred.

Familiarity with library operations and functions, including circulation desk and reference desk tasks preferred.

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree in related discipline

Minimum Experience:

Five (5) years in related field

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
