Position Overview:
This is not your typical fine art appraisal role! We are seeking a highly process-driven manager to lead our Appraisals Team. The Appraisals Team Manager will quarterback a staff of appraisers to provide on-going appraisal needs across the Masterworks portfolio and their associated investment vehicles (SPVs). The Appraisals Team supports multiple internal clients, including: our Acquisitions team (dozens of daily sourcing valuations), the Finance team (quarterly appraisals) and external stakeholders, including auditors, investors and partners as required. You will support the CFO and SPV Controller in maintaining our art appraisal frameworks, methodologies and policies and will own the process to implement and apply them consistently.
The Appraisals Team Manager is experienced in art valuation techniques, methodologies and best-practices and is energized by the prospect of deploying that skillset to art as an asset class.
Our future Appraisals Team Manager is experienced in leading teams and managing people. They are highly process driven, love to implement and learn new tools/systems, are a true player-coach and thrive in a very fast-paced environment. The role will sit within the Finance and Operations team, will manage a small team (3-4 persons) and initially report to the Chief Financial Officer.
Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for:
- Quarterbacking the team, process and deliverables related to ongoing appraisal requirements of the Masterworks' artwork portfolio and investment vehicles, including:
- Daily Sourcing valuations
- Quarterly appraisals
- Managing a team of on-staff appraisers (hiring, coaching, etc)
- Effectively prioritizing continuously changing requests from stakeholders
- Developing the tools, workflow and staffing needs to deliver consistent, high-quality appraisal work in support of our growing portfolio
- Owning the appraisal policies, enhancing a rules, data-based approach and ensuring consistent application
- Developing the tools, dashboards to present and contextualize appraisals to external stakeholders, including business valuation (but not necessarily art) experts
- Working with finance, research and engineering to enhance the data flows between internal groups
Requirements or Skill Sets:
- 3-5 years in a management role in art appraisals, commercial art market, esoteric asset valuation or similar or related field
- Don't have an art market background, but are passionate and highly knowledgeable about the market and think you would be a great fit? We'd love to hear from you and tell us why!
- You are USPAP-certified (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice)
- You have experience managing people (hiring, coaching, etc)
- You have used Airtable or other databases tools before
- You are obsessed with process management and love tools to help do it–Clickup, Monday, Asana or similar
- You possess Excel / Google Sheets superpowers
- You always just need to figure out how stuff works–intellectually curious
- Finding errors drives you nuts–meticulous attention to detail
- You are a clear, cogent, non-jargon communicator–written and verbal
- You need to be in a high-growth, fast-paced environment
Measurements of Success in First 90 Days:
- Drives the efficient completion of the next quarterly valuation cycle
- Own the application of Masterworks appraisal policies
- Assess the existing workflow and tools to manage quarterly appraisals and propose enhancements to scale
- Get up to speed on general daily sourcing valuations and how they are used by the Acquisitions team
How does Masterworks think about compensation?
The compensation range for the role is $120-160k (inclusive only of base salary, and exclusive of other potential competitive benefits such as on-target commission, bonus payments, and equity). Our ranges are very broad to accommodate all types of candidates and encourage growth. Specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on factors such as education, experience, qualifications, and alignment with market data. Exceptional candidates may receive salaries outside of the posted ranges.
