This is a non-permanent position expected to last one year (12 months).

The Department of Corrections is seeking highly motivated and qualified individual to fill one permanent Maintenance Mechanic 4 position at Stafford Creek Corrections Center (SCCC).

At Stafford Creek Corrections Center, an adult correctional facility, this position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and modification of facility buildings, mechanical equipment, machinery and specific apparatus in support of the Department of Corrections (DOC) mission: The Department of Corrections in collaboration with its criminal justice partners, victims, citizens, and other stakeholders will enhance community safety, reduce victimization, and hold Incarcerated Individuals accountable through the administration of criminal sanctions and effective correctional programs.

Duties

Under the supervision of the Stafford Creek Correction Center (SCCC) Plant Manager this position. Direct and supervise a crew of Incarcerated Individual workers engaged in the manufacture, installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical equipment, machinery, facility systems, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and specific apparatus.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare preliminary cost estimates and projections for assigned task or projects.
  • Order sufficient required materials to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Schedule work to be completed based upon its assigned priority.
  • Use current SCCC procedures to hire and train Incarcerated Individual workers as needed.
  • Ensure that all safety and security procedures are followed. For example, all tool and key accountability policies and procedures are adhered to.
  • Conduct a preventive maintenance program for assigned machinery and equipment throughout the facility.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:


  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade and five years of experience as a journey-level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair.
  • Washington State Journeyman Electrical License is required if supervising Incarcerated individuals in the performance of electrical work.
  • Must possess an HVAC Technician Certification EPA Clean Air Section 608 type: Universal.
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted, motor vehicle operator's license

Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in a correctional environment. DOC background security clearance check is conducted as part of the qualification process.
  • Perform work duties in close contact with and among large groups of confined Incarcerated Individuals who live in crowded/confined spaces, who may have a history of violent behavior, and who may be aggressive and/or confrontational toward other Incarcerated Individuals and staff.
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment and in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime and/or call-back shifts as required after regular hours, on weekends or holidays when needed for essential primary facility operations or maintenance.
  • Ability to work in an environment with continual standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, kneeling, and bending.
  • Ability to lift, move and /or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Must be able to work with people from diverse backgrounds and experience.
