Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Maintenance/Construction Technician II at Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum State Historic Site regularly performs skilled work and specializes in at least one trade in connection with the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of buildings and facilities and related equipment and machinery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Function at the journey level in a skilled trade such as HVAC, carpentry, masonry, painting, small engine, electrical, roofing, or plumbing.
  • Function at or near the journey level in other skilled trades.
  • Assist higher level trades specialists in the completion of non-routine and complex projects when applicable.
  • Determine work to be done through personal inspection and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Monitor contractors on-site working on projects while in progress and review work to assure quality and adherence to contract terms.
  • Determine site maintenance requirements and take steps to complete them, including all groundwork.
  • Responsible for inspections of buildings and facilities to ensure visitor and staff safety.
  • Ensure the proper care and usage of all related facilities and equipment in a museum context.
  • Ensure sanitation ad restocking of restrooms and other site facilities.
  • Coordinate the set-up for site rentals.
  • Assist other sites as needed and available.
  • Work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
The North Carolina Division of State Historic Sites is responsible for the stewardship of 27 historic sites that include nearly 5,000 acres of preserved property, 281 historic and modern buildings and 65,000 artifacts spanning the entire breadth of North Carolina’s history from pre-European settlement to the 20th century.

Founded in 1902 by Dr. Charlotte Hawkins Brown, Palmer Memorial Institute transformed the lives of more than 2,000 African American students. Today, visitors can explore this unique environment where boys and girls lived and learned during the greater part of the 20th century.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

In order to qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSA's listed below:

  • Must have demonstrated experience in a skilled trade.
  • Must have demonstrated experience with grounds maintenance.
  • Must have demonstrated experience in general preventive maintenance of buildings and equipment.
  • Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous activities.
  • Must be able to walk long distances on uneven ground.
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work on lifts and roofs.
  • Must have a valid NC Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
Management Preference:
Knowledge of building preservation and repair.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification:
May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
