The job of Professional Development Specialist is done for the purpose/s of developing and implementing professional development opportunities and providing technical assistance that is driven from research-based best practices in both general and special education, is aligned with current federal and state regulations, and promotes the growth of teachers to maximize student outcomes.


  • Serves as a liaison and resource to initiate, facilitate, and/or provide exemplary professional development and technical assistance services to stakeholders that support PDE Bureau of Special Education initiatives.
  • Train and provide ongoing technical assistance to facilitate, sustain, and expand teacher and administrator capacity across special education initiatives.
  • Provides direct assistance to educational staff, administrators, agency personnel, and families (when appropriate), in changing behaviors and addressing challenging behaviors of student’s Pre-K through 12th grade.
  • Serves as a collaborative consultant with school and agency personnel and provides expertise regarding student behavior and/or program modifications in complex student or classroom cases.
  • Attends meetings and professional development sessions at the local, county, state and national level, as necessary, to stay current with assigned initiatives.
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and the ability to Independently manage complex and overlapping projects that detail-oriented and time-bound.
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively with internal and external staff for promoting the vision of professional learning and innovation within the DCIU and throughout Delaware County.
  • Represents the DCIU in a manner when working with external parties to promote a positive relationship that enables the creation of lasting systems change.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work

Experience Required: 4+ years of teaching experience; Experience in School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions (PBIS); Experience with students with significantly challenging behaviors is preferred, Experience working in Early Childhood Education is preferred.


Education Required: Master’s Degree in job related area of teaching and learning


Certification Required: Valid Special Education Teacher Certification


Some local, county, state, and national travel is required.


This is a 10-month position and will follow the school year calendar.
