EXPLANATION OF AMERICORPS DUTIES
Members will provide one-to-one and/or small groups (1/6) tutoring to students in Kindergarten through fourth grade in Chualar, Salinas, King City, Seaside and the greater Monterey County to help them improve their fluency and comprehension in-person and/or virtually (remotely). Tutoring sessions will include: reading and discussing books; listening to students read a variety of texts at his or her independent reading level; promoting reading through individually and teacher-designed activities; engaging in phonemic awareness skill building exercises; and expanding student’s knowledge base through the written word. Tutoring will take place throughout the entire school year and summer school, during and after school hours. Orientation, ongoing trainings, and most service events take place in
Salinas. During the after-school hours, members are able to develop curriculum for small groups in K-4 grade using children’s books or plays in combination with discussion to develop literacy in students. One- on-one or pair reading tutoring is also acceptable during afterschool hours.

TERM OF SERVICE
Full Time Service: August 29, 2022-July 31, 2023 Part-Time Service: Between August 29, 2022-June

1700 hours of service. 80% (a minimum of 1360 hours) must be spent in direct service Half-time
AmeriCorps member will provide a minimum of 900 hours of service. 80% (a minimum of 720 hours) must be spent in direct service

SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS
1700 hour members (Full-Time): M-F 8:00-5:OOpm minimum, some mandatory weekends and evenings -30 minute lunch and two non-consecutive 5-15 minute breaks (not taken at the beginning or end of day) 900 hour members (Part-Time): M-F 8:00-2:OOpm minimum, some mandatory weekends and evenings -30 minute lunch and one 5-15 minute break (not taken at the beginning or end of service

day) *Lunch break must not be counted in service hours. Service hours will be served virtually/remotely and/or in person at their assigned school site.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY! ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Member will provide one to one or small group literacy-focused tutoring to K-4 students whose reading achievement is below grade level. Tutoring will occur during regular school hours and/or extended day programs. Each child will be tutored a minimum of three to five times per week for at least 30 minutes per session.
  • Member will create daily individual lesson plans and follow the school or program’s design for student reading intervention.
  • Member will be responsible to sign in and sign out at their assigned school sites daily with staff initials, to log their service hours accurately.
  • Member will maintain accurate tutoring records, assessment measures and student hours logs. Member will input accurate data monthly for all students.
  • Member will complete time sheets electronically and comply with the program’s due dates.
  • Member will participate in training as determined by Program Coordinator and School Site Supervisor in person and/or virtually.
  • Member will participate in community literacy events and in the planning and implementation of these events in person and/or virtually.
  • Member will take a role in a program committee and complete committee responsibilities.
  • Member will participate in National Service Days as well as all other Days of Service recognized and required by the Program and/or California Volunteers in person and/or virtually.
  • Member will engage and manage volunteers to promote family and community literacy.
  • The member’s direct supervisor is the school Site Principal or other staff designated by the Principal.
  • As an AmeriCorps member, during your full-time

term of service, you will be required to serve more than 8 hours per day or 40+ hours per week. If you are unable to serve more than 8 hours per day or 40+ hours per week on any given occasion, you must provide your program Coordinator with a legitimate reason in order to be excused from the service activity.

  • As an AmeriCorps member, during your half-time term of service, if you are serving 900 hours in 5.5-6 months time, you will be required to serve more than 8 hours per day or 40+ hours per week. If you are unable to serve more than 8 hours per day or 40+ hours per week on any given occasion, you must provide your Program Coordinator with a legitimate reason in order to be excused from the service activity.**
  • As an AmeriCorps member, during half-time term of service, if you are serving 900 hours in 9-11 months time, you may be required to serve some 8-hour days, your typical schedule will be 5-6 hours per day or 20- 30 hours per week. If you are unable to serve 5-6 hours per day or 25-30 hours per week, you must provide your Program Coordinator with a legitimate reason in order to be excused from regular scheduled service or alternate service times.QUALIFICATIONS **
  • Excellent reading, writing and verbal communication skills
  • Tutoring, mentoring, teaching or similar experience preferred
  • Prefer a minimum of 6 months experience working or volunteering with youth
  • Ability to create positive relationships with school staff and AmeriCorps peers of all backgrounds An interest in and/or background in community service and volunteerism
  • Must be able to adapt to change in work environment, accept constructive feedback, and actively resolve conflicts
  • Possess leadership and interpersonal skills to work effectively with others
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to work independently and as team member Have reliable transportation
  • AA or Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Bi-lingual Spanish and English preferred

  • Annual living allowance of $23,500 (1700 hours) or $11,750 (900 hours)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma! GED required
  • Minimum age 18
  • Clear criminal background check (DOJ and FBI; National Sex Offender Public Database, Out-of State

Criminal History check) * Current clear TB test

  • US Citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Must supply photo ID, Proof of Age, and Primary Documentation of status as US citizen, US National, or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Obtain CPR/ First Aid certification or provide current certification
  • All members will abide by AmeriCorps Prohibited Activities per member contract.SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to be committed to high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws, school policies, and all of the program’s safety policies and rules.
  • Pass a Child Abuse Prevention online course
  • Mandated Reporter during service
  • Be aware of safety protocols and report any issues to appropriate supervisor or management personnel
