Literacy Mid-South OST AmeriCorps Member Job at AmeriCorps
Out-of-School Time (OST) AmeriCorps members seek to increase reading proficiency among targeted groups of children in low-income areas as well as to encourage the participation of parents in order to provide a comprehensive structure of support for the whole family. Research has demonstrated the benefit of quality OST literacy instruction for elementary students. Aligned with our county's school districts and a network of partners, Literacy Mid-South (LMS) seeks to improve third grade reading proficiency throughout Shelby County-but especially in the underserved areas of the city of Memphis. OST AmeriCorps members will serve as trained, after-school program support. Members will be trained in LMS’s K-5 literacy interventions, including interactive read-alouds, small group reads, phonemic awareness, and more. Members will provide ~25 hours of service a week to include directly engaging with students, leading instruction, supporting recreational activities, providing direct literacy interventions, conducting literacy assessments, developing programming, engaging families, and distributing literacy resources.
