Your New Role:
Serve as a Life Skills Coach provide case management, skill development, resource brokerage and referral, case coordination and advocacy services to former and current youth in care ages 16-20. In addition, perform the role of LGBTQ+ Specialist on three levels: 1) working with individual LGBTQ-identified youth referred to PDX-Connect, 2) acting as one of the team leaders on LGBTQ-specific issues for program youth/staff/interns, including how we’re modifying our services to best meet the needs of youth in the program, and 3) serve as a point person for LGBTQ advocacy and education for PDX-Connect with our community partners.
What this Role Is...
Coaching – supporting transition age youth to identify and achieve their goals as they transition to adulthood
Skill-building – providing scaffold support to help those we serve build internal and external assets and skills to achieve their self-identified goals
Resource Brokerage –identifying resources and connecting those we serve with supportive resource and permanent connections
Advocacy – creating opportunity for youth to have be leaders on their support teams
Skills & Attributes:
- Understanding of the assets, needs and development of transition age youth
- Ability to utilize traditional and non-traditional methods of skill-building to engage youth in the program and identify school, work and life related goals and plans.
- Capacity to self-manage and self-advocate as related to community-based work
Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology or related human services field or combination of a lived personal experience in foster care and work experience. Will consider lived experience in substitute of years of Education.
· At least 2 years of experience working with youth who face multiple barriers
· Basic working knowledge of the foster care system
· A minimum of 2 years of experience working with LGBTQ youth, and a strong working knowledge of the core elements involved in youth work, such as mental health, trauma, abuse, resilience and adolescent development including brain development.
· Experience, ability, and commitment to working with LGBTQ and other culturally diverse staff, participants and community, particularly around the politics, theories and practice models surrounding gender and sexuality.
· Use of personal/agency vehicle for transporting self and clients for work purposes
· Ability to work with multi-cultural staff and youth
