Duties & Responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, the Head Librarian leads and administers all aspects of library services and resources in support of student learning, academic programs, and faculty teaching and service. This position is responsible for developing and evaluating integrated information services, advancing research within and across disciplines, and fostering student learning and academic success, while empowering a culture of assessment and efficiency. The Head Librarian facilitates the ongoing development of the Library as an instructional resource that integrates the use of technology, engages with the College community, collaborates with academic support and other departments, and sustains a vibrant research and learning community.
Advance the Library's role in supporting the College mission, academic programs, and student success through management and improvement of information resources and services.- Provide vision and strategic leadership for the Library and administers all aspects of library resources, services, and operations, including remote Library resources and services at outreach centers and online.
- Work with administrative and faculty leadership to determine short, mid-term and long- range academic support resources planning and goals for the Library.
- Lead and motivate librarians and staff while directing their efforts with student learning, research support services, user services, including the reference desk, information literacy instruction, collection development and maintenance, and promotion of the Library's resources and services.
- Develop and implement relevant policies, planning processes, and closed-loop assessments of library operations and services, and anticipate and recommend changes in accordance with the developing needs of the library and college.
- Direct the planning, coordination, and implementation of library projects, including accreditation, grant proposals, grant-funded initiatives, etc.
- Conduct budget planning, fund allocation and fiscal management for library materials and operations, and proactively and creatively pursue a variety of funding sources, including donations and grants.
- Regularly evaluate and innovate library policies and practices, assess the effectiveness and efficiency of library services, and write assessment reports and funding requests as appropriate.
- Oversee and participate in the development of the library’s collections through acquisition and management of current and retrospective materials, including print, media and electronic resources that support the curriculum and mission of the college.
- Negotiate licensing contracts with information resource and service providers.
- As a member of the UH Library Council, collaboratively shape system-wide library policy, negotiates consortium vendor agreements, shares resources, and oversees the acquisition and implementation of Library Management and Information Management systems
- Effectively collaborate across a diverse community, including maintaining close working relationships with academic programs, other campus stakeholders, consortia partners, content providers and vendors, in order to serve students and to enhance the success of the college community.
- Engage in the recruitment, hiring, supervision and evaluation of Library staff, and ensure staff maintain an approved program of professional self-improvement.
- Work closely with the college's administration and Operations & Maintenance unit to manage library infrastructure and facilities in order to maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment.
- Participate in professional self-development activities, and keep current with issues related to Maui Nui, the Hawaiian community, academic librarianship, DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) initiatives, and emerging technologies.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science.
- Five (5) or more years of experience working in an Academic Library in higher education, post degree.
- A record of leadership that includes promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Demonstrated experience with developing, implementing, and evaluating library services, including reference, instruction, collection development, outreach, marketing and the use and management of integrated library system(s), library services platforms, and learning resources in an academic setting.
- Experience in developing, administering and managing a complex budget, as well as in fundraising, grant writing, and grant management.
- Experience with assessment and assessment-based planning.
- Excellent computer, web, and multimedia design and development skills, and a demonstrated ability to seek out and learn new technology tools/skills. Experience with LibApps, web design, and image editing software programs is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to creatively develop, implement, and sustain new library programs and services.
- Proven ability to develop productive partnerships, promote cooperation, and work collaboratively in a multicultural and service-oriented environment.
- Student centered - with a focus on inclusion, equity, and belonging - and a willingness to adopt a “hands-on” approach to completion of projects and tasks, to work in a dynamic environment that requires flexibility, and to balance multiple projects and responsibilities.
- An understanding of national standards and emerging challenges facing academic libraries, and demonstrated ability to formulate and implement innovative approaches and solutions.
- Experience in library administration with assumption of progressive and varied responsibilities, and a demonstrated ability to apply creative and analytical thinking in making administrative decisions, solving problems, forming and interpreting policies, implementing new or revised systems, procedures, and workflows.
- Knowledge of Native Hawaiian history, language, politics, practices and contemporary issues.
- Knowledge of current instructional pedagogy, student learning outcomes and assessment practices.
- Record of demonstrated excellence in professional activity and achievement.
- Additional Master's or PhD preferred
