The Center for Heirs’ Property Preservation® (CHPP®), a nonprofit organization established in February 2005, has a mission of protecting heirs’ property (HP)—a form of landownership—and promoting the sustainable use of land to provide increased economic benefit to low-wealth families through education, advocacy, legal services, and forestry technical assistance primarily in the counties of Allendale, Bamberg, Beaufort, Berkeley, Calhoun, Charleston, Chesterfield, Clarendon, Colleton, Darlington, Dillion, Dorchester, Florence, Georgetown, Hampton, Horry, Jasper, Kershaw, Lee, Marlboro, Marion, Orangeburg, Richland, Sumter and Williamsburg in South Carolina.

In addition, CHPP® has a national and regional leadership role in providing expertise on the issue of HP and, ultimately, in developing business models for best practices in the work needed to address the HP issue in all its complexity.

Position Description

CHPP® is a rapidly growing, results-oriented, small team workplace seeking a smart, energetic, and committed individual to join the Legal team as a Legal Administrative Assistant. Under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services, will perform work at the request of the attorneys and paralegal and provides assistance to the CHPP staff as a whole. This position is located in Florence, SC, located at 1831 West Evans St., Unit 312, Florence, SC 29501.

Essential Job Functions

· Performs a variety of responsible secretarial duties that will include acting as the primary office receptionist, answering inquiries over the phone, setting up and/or maintaining filing systems and appointment calendars, and managing secretarial and administrative details with minimum direction.

· Types and reviews outgoing correspondence to ensure all legal documents and enclosures are in proper processing order and that correspondence is grammatically correct.

· Type correspondence for signature of attorney, checking accuracy of grammar, as well as independently composing general correspondence.

· Enters new applicant and current client data into database and drafts and delivers associated correspondence.

· Assists in conducting client education and Wills clinics, to include the set-up and breaking down of sites.

· Sign for deliveries and notify personnel of deliveries.

· Operates a variety of office machines.

· Performs other duties as assigned or requested by the Director of Legal Services or Executive Team.

Desired Experience, Education, Skills and Knowledge

· Must possess a High School diploma or GED, an Associate’s degree is preferred, with at least one (1) year of legal secretarial experience or equivalent.

· Must have excellent communication skills, both verbally and writing, and the ability to successfully multi-task and collaborate with others.

· Must be a proficient in using Microsoft Office products.

· Experience with CRM software, Salesforce, preferred.

· Must exercise discretion when handling confidential information.

· Must genuinely like interacting with people of diverse backgrounds, including clients and agency personnel.

· Exercises good judgment in following Center standards and does not deviate from the standards.

· Must be able to conduct and schedule appointments, trainings, interviews, and community forums.

· Is knowledgeable of laws and regulations related to heirs’ property, real property, and estates.

· Has previously demonstrated administrative skills, communication skills and the ability to interface with all socio-economic levels.

· Can attend and participate in training courses in order to expand knowledge in area of duties and responsibilities.

· Has a thorough knowledge of practices, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations governing the Center.

· Has a strong commitment and belief in the concept of alternative dispute resolution.

Compensation

Hiring Range: $30,000 - $34,000

Compensation consists of (1) a base salary that is dependent upon the level of experience and falls within Center Pay Grade 3 ($28,727 - $48,837) and (2) benefits (i.e., paid leave, company paid health and dental insurance, and retirement contribution).
