Position Summary:

The Leave and Accommodation Specialist provides support to the entire University of Alaska (UA) system by focusing on Family Medical Leave (FML), Long-term Disability (LTD), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for all university employees. This position will focus on providing a high level of customer service to UA employees and will work closely with our vendor to ensure prompt communication and compliance. Remote work within the state of Alaska will be considered for this position.

Duties:

100Serve as liaison between University of Alaska employees and supervisors, and UA’s FML/LTD/ADA vendor. First point of contact for all questions/concerns from employees or vendor. Reconcile issues and understand when to escalate to the Senior Specialist or Director. Follow up on all inquiries and ensure prompt, professional, and well-communicated resolutions. Run reports to monitor time reporting and communicate with all employees on FML regarding compliance timeframes. Ensure supervisors are well informed of their responsibilities and answer all questions regarding their employee’s absence. Communicate with vendor when a leave needs to be initiated by the University. Draft communications for review by the Senior Specialist, as needed. Make recommendations on communication plans and/or website layout based on feedback from employees and supervisors. Coordinate training with vendor and ensure communication to employee population. In conjunction with Labor and Employee Engagement, explain/assist transition for employees once their FML entitlement has exhausted. Direct employees and their supervisors to the correct resources depending on the outcome. Monitor all Long-term Disability claims (LTD). Answer and/or direct employee or supervisor questions. Ensure timely completion and submission of all employer LTD forms. Monitor status and communicate with HR Accounting and our COBRA vendor regarding any approved LTD claims. Facilitate all Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) inquiries. Ensure prompt completion of paperwork and clear communication of expectations to employee and supervisor. Work closely with Labor and Employee Engagement, when needed. Monitor the University’s policies and procedures for compliance under federal and state laws and regulations in relation to leaves and accommodation. Perform other duties as assigned.Essential
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of benefits administration. Background of FML/LTD/ADA requirements under federal and state laws. Ability to apply understanding and interpretation of University, federal and state requirements for Family Medical Leave, long-term disability, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ability to review documents for accuracy and compliance. Ability to analyze complex issues and develop strategies for resolution. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships.

Typical Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field and two years professional human
resources experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.



Required Education or Training:

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred: Professional Human Resources (PHR) certification. Certification of disability administration in higher education.



Salary Information:

This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 79, based on education and experience.
