Purpose Statement:

The Lead Infant/Toddler Teacher is responsible for the care, supervision and management of a class of Infants or Toddlers in accord with the curriculum plan and philosophies of Discovery Days Preschool. The principal duties of the Infant/Toddler Teacher include: caring for the three/four children in your primary caregiving group while also working in a group setting to carry out activities on a daily basis and evaluate the effectiveness of child development activities, ensure the safety and well-being of the children, maintain regular communication with parents, and contribute to the effective operation of the overall early care and education center. The Infant/Toddler Teacher reports to the Center Director, Assistant Directors. and also supervises any floater teachers.

Requirements:

  • A college degree in child development or early childhood education and at least 6 months experience working in a child care center (minimum 3 hours a day for 50 days in 6 months) OR
  • An associate degree in child development or early childhood education and at least 6 months experience working in a child care center (minimum 3 hours a day for 50 days in 6 months) OR
  • A child development Associate teacher permit/Teacher permit/Master teacher permit OR
  • Must have completed 12 units of ECE coursework to include a general child development course, child family and community course and an infant/toddler course and 6 months experience.
  • Willing and able to pursue higher education in accordance with NAEYC, and state guidelines for ECE teachers.
  • Current Pediatric First-Aid and CPR certification (Must be in person and not online)
  • Evidence of Negative TB test and physical exam within 1 year
  • Proof of MMR vaccine. Proof of Dtap and tetanus vaccine within the last 10 years.
  • Proof of flu vaccine or declination form.
  • Must provide proof of COVID vaccine.
  • Completion of the following forms:
  • Personnel Record LIC 501
  • Health Screening Report LIC 503
  • Notice of Employee Rights LIC 9052
  • Criminal background clearance (including FBI, DOJ and Child Abuse) LIC 9182 or 9163
  • Completed criminal record statement LIC 508
  • Completed statement of acknowledging requirements for reporting child abuse LIC 9108
  • Certificate noting completion of Mandated Reporter training
  • Certificate noting completion of pesticide training
  • Complete in-service trainings as scheduled for all staff

Job Responsibilities:

Interaction with Children

The goal of teachers at DDP is to provide a warm, nurturing, safe, and loving environment where self-concepts are enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality respected. To this end the specific responsibilities included, but are not limited to the following:

  • Protects the safety of all children in the center.
  • Directly supervises children at all times.
  • The use of cell phones is not allowed, unless using it to document the child’s day with videos, photos or using the Bright Wheel system. Personal use of cell phones during work hours (despite breaks and lunch break) is not allowed.
  • Uses positive phrasing with children. Does not label children.
  • Communicates frequently with children throughout the day, naming objects, actions, using who, what, when, where and why, and open-ended questions.
  • Exhibits behavior management consistent with DDELC philosophies.
  • Treats each child with dignity and respect, recognizing the cultural and socio-economic diversity of the population.
  • Responds to the individual needs and learning styles of children.
  • Responds to children in distress promptly and appropriately. Teachers are sensitive and aware to formation of attachment young children have toothier teachers.
  • Is responsible for all mealtime and snack activities of the group. Helps children serve themselves family-style at snack and sits with children; Monitors children closely during meals.

Health and Safety Issues

  • Complies with applicable universal precautions and infection control guidelines and procedures.
  • Displays familiarity with and follows DDP’s Health Care Policies.
  • Reports immediately any needed repairs to Center Director.
  • Is responsible for the welfare, health, and safety of the children in the center.
  • Ensures that children are supervised at all times as well as in the bathroom.
  • Assists calmly in evacuation of the building in an emergency and in practice drills, and is able to respond to any emergency.
  • Cleans and disinfects mouthed toys before next use, chairs and toys when soiled or at least weekly, mats/cots/cribs weekly.

Planning

  • Plans activities and lessons reflecting philosophy of DDP with age-appropriate and child-centered activities. Provides a well-balanced schedule of individual/group activities, and active/quiet activities with variations of structure.
  • Lesson plans are due in the director’s box by 4:00PM Every Friday
  • Plans open ended activities with an emphasis on children’s interests
  • Plans supervised activities for outdoor or indoor gross motor play
  • Keeps informal classroom anecdotal notes on children’s progress on an on-going basis, through observations and documentation (developmental assessments, pictures, quotes of what the kids are saying/doing).
  • Develops and maintains portfolios of children’s developmental progress, keeping records, work samples and other evidence of growth and development.
  • Reads to children daily in circle time and throughout the day.
  • Uses resources, such as libraries, to incorporate literature into the daily routine and rotates books weekly or bi-weekly.
  • Prepares or makes available in advance, materials needed for planned activities.
  • Plans curriculum to include hands-on, interactive activities.
  • Plans and provides appropriate activities to assure smooth transitions throughout the day.

Interaction with Parents

  • DDP establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with each child’s family to foster children’s development. These relationships are sensitive to family composition, language and culture.
  • Acknowledges parent and child with a greeting at drop-off and pick-up.
  • Communicates with parents daily, reports at least one positive event (accomplishment, amusing anecdote, etc.) about each child to the parent.
  • Prepares memo daily for parent, indicating child’s functioning each day using daily sheets.
  • Treats parents with dignity and respect, recognizing the cultural and socio-economic diversity of the population.
  • Makes parents aware of classroom and center activities, and encourages family involvement
  • Brings any parent feedback, concerns about children, etc. to the attention of the Center Director before discussing with the parent, and documents all such parent conversations.
  • Insures that items (papers, dirty clothes, etc.) are taken home and follows up with parents on items to be brought to the center.
  • Respects the confidentiality of families, and takes care not to speak in front of the children about that child or other children.
  • Participates in parent conferences as needed.

Classroom Appearance

  • Keep room organized, clean and visually pleasing and inviting to young children.
  • Rotate toys when prep when time is scheduled.
  • Keep toy bins organized.
  • No clutter within the classroom.
  • Creates classroom environment reflecting the diversity of children & families and children’s interests, including all areas of the room; i.e. blocks, dramatic play, manipulatives, literacy, art, science, math, and music.
  • Teachers are not permitted to move furniture that is secured to the wall without prior consent from the center director.
  • Labels shelves with pictures and words for easy identification by children ages 2 and up.
  • Displays children’s artwork in an attractive manner
  • Cleans floors, tables, chairs, and sinks after meals, when spills occur, or after messy activities. Sanitize according to infection control guidelines.
  • Maintains cubbies neatly, sweeping periodically, and sending home older papers and other belongings.
  • Leaves classroom at end of the day with tables cleaned, and floors free of debris and toys and trash taken out.
  • Shares cleaning duties fairly with co-workers and maintains a clean safe and attractive classroom.

Line of Supervision

  • Reports to Center Director and Assistant Directors.
  • Supervise the classroom all floater teachers, aides, interns, substitutes and parent volunteers when in your classroom.
  • Provide necessary instruction and training for those assisting in the classroom environment.
  • Report any misconduct issues of other staff members to assistant director or director within 24 hours of observed incident.
  • Prepares for and contributes to regular supervisory meetings.
  • Attends, participates in, and contributes constructively to DDELC newsletters and any staff meetings or trainings.
  • Informs Center Director of any pertinent information regarding children, parents, or other staff.
  • Sets professional goals and objectives.
  • Seeks supervision and remains open to supervisor’s suggestions.
  • Meets deadlines in completing lesson plans, self-evaluations, newsletter contributions, progress reports, or any other reports requested by Center Director

General/Professionalism

  • Has good work habits, is in place and ready to work at scheduled time, and shows no undue tardiness or absenteeism. Must give 3 weeks notice for PTO and as much notice as possible for sick day. The director reserves the right to ask for a doctors note if employee calls in sick.
  • Must wear DDELC apron. Must keep apron clean. If a new apron is required please talk to center director.
  • Documents and remains current with state requirements for physical examination, First-Aid, CPR, in-service training, mandated reporter training, pesticide training and all immunization records.
  • Tidies children’s appearances throughout the day – sees that shoes are on proper feet, tied, hands and faces cleans, etc...
  • Uses smocks for messy activities and bibs for infant and toddler meals.
  • Follows daily schedule of DDP.
  • Follows opening and closing procedures as dictated by work schedule.
  • Acts as a positive representative of DDP to parents and community.
  • Covers responsibilities (i.e.: prepares lesson plans and materials for activities for use by substitute)when absent.
  • Supports and directs new staff, teacher aides, volunteers, student interns etc. in the policies and practices of DDP including classroom schedule, behavior management, lesson planning, classroom upkeep, etc.
  • Cooperates with and shows respect for co-workers at all levels. Avoids gossip. Does not speak about personal problems in front of the children.
  • Approaches problems in a constructive fashion, taking initiative to correct problems whenever possible
  • Contributes ideas for better servicing of children and families.
  • Completes classroom attendance on ongoing basis; being aware of the number of children in your care at all times,
  • Dresses according to Dress Code in Personnel policies: both in a professional manner as well as one that allows active participation with children. Personal appearance is neat and clean.
  • Keep abreast of current issues in the field of Early Childhood Education.

General Pay and Contract Provisions:

  • 40 hour work week with hours between 7:30AM and 6:00PM.
  • Compensation dependent on units completed, degrees earned and experience
  • Pay periods are the 14th-28th and the 29th-13th of each month.
  • Pay days are on the 5th and the 20th of each month.
