Phelps Dunbar LLP is looking for a Business Development Manager resident in Houston or any of the firm’s other U.S. offices. The candidate will work with firm leaders to develop and implement business development plans for assigned practice and working groups. Excellent writing and editing skills are required. The position will work closely with the firm’s Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer, Director of Business Development, Practice and Working Group Leaders, and other members of the Marketing and Business Development team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Work with practice and working group leaders to define business development objectives and proactively identify tactics and action steps designed to achieve those objectives.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to build the firm’s business, including identifying targeted thought leadership opportunities, networking and trade association opportunities, and other outreach / engagement opportunities.
  • Lead the pitch, proposal and RFP response process for assigned practices and working groups, including developing proposal strategies, evaluating competitive intelligence, and drafting pitches in partnership with the attorneys and editorial team.
  • Work with fellow Marketing and Business Development team members to proactively identify cross-selling opportunities across the firm.
  • Collaborate with Marketing colleagues to ensure that practice descriptions, attorney biographies and other marketing materials effectively communicate the firm’s capabilities and are kept up to date.
  • Assist in developing and drafting relevant award submissions, including Chambers USA.
  • Collaborate with Marketing colleagues on client events, conferences, and related sponsorships, including the development of targeted guest lists, evaluation of ROI, and ensuring follow-up on any resulting business development opportunities.
  • Provide market and competitive intelligence to assigned practice and working groups.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the firm’s capabilities across assigned practices and industry groups.

Requirements:


  • A minimum of five to seven years of professional services industry experience, preferably in a law firm, with relevant experience in a marketing or business development role.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree a plus.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, presentation and overall communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and prioritize multiple competing demands.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Experienced user of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and knowledgeable about other social media platforms trends.
  • Ability to travel to the firm’s office and other events as needed.
