Job Summary and Qualifications

The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for department specific technical, clerical and support functions; Adheres to standards of practice and universal precautions; Performs associated laboratory department clerical duties to include moderate computer operations and telephone communications within scope of technical duties; Performs expanded technical and clerical functions and applies critical thinking and decision making skills to their daily functions. Performs waived and moderate complexity testing in areas that they have been deemed competent and meet CLIA subpart M testing personnel requirements. In addition, promotes a supportive environment that encourages collegiality. Phlebotomist is educated on the protocols specific for Neonate/Infant (0-12 months), Pediatrics (1 – 17 years), Adults (18 – 79 years), and the Elderly (80+ years).

Tasks and responsibilities include:

• Processing specimens: As appropriate for each area of the lab, this may include hand staining, gram staining, micro set ups, inoculating specimens, aliquot reagents and solutions, setting up cultures, cytopreparation, accessioning, receiving, processing, pouring over, distributing, storing, disposing of specimens.
• Anatomic Pathology: Assisting in specialized specimen collection processes and bedside testing, such as fine needle aspirations .General interpretation overview of clinical cases as well as correct determination of appropriate auto text messages.
• Communicates with healthcare personnel outside of department with regard to reports, clarification of requests, other problems related to specimens, requests, and testing delays.
• Performs waived and/or moderate complexity testing if deemed competent and meets CLIA subpart M testing personnel requirements.
• Other duties, including phlebotomy, as needed.

What qualifications you will need:

• Previous experience preferred. Must be able to exhibit ability to collect samples from every age group with skill.
• Ability to perform work that requires prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking
• BLS required. New employees have 90 days from hire date to obtain.
