Lab Superintendent Job at The Doe Run Company
Do you have a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or other natural sciences? The Doe run Company is searching for a Lab Superintendent to direct and coordinate all areas of analysis at Central Lab to maximize throughput and achieve operational goals while meeting the needs of the customers (including samples from Mills, environmental, R&D, jackhammer, and diamond drill core). Maintains quality and timeliness of all laboratory operations within budgetary guidelines and ensure compliance with all regulatory directives, policies, procedures and regulations.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee long-range planning, identify opportunities for improvement or changes needed to optimize performance, improve safety and remain compliant with all regulations. Prioritize projects and tasks and assign resources for the achievement of goals.
- Ensuring Quality Assurance and Quality Control: review and update quality manuals, review instrument performance, adhere to SOP and other work tasks via audits, developing new methods of analysis.
- Lead and develop lab teams and processes, delegate and direct lab supervisors in the performance of their duties and communicate lab performance information to management and crews to enhance performance.
- Make timely and effective decisions regarding laboratory procedures and analytical methods to ensure quality results are produced.
- Monitor Analytical Results: review data and assays produced by laboratory technicians, ensure that quality checks run withing the acceptable limits; that assay figures are correctly obtained and entered; and that appropriate procedures are used to obtain results.
- Create, maintain, edit, and update laboratory SOP's to comply with safety and environmental requirements as well as assessing and improving current methods; completing Demonstrations of Capability with employees to ensure knowledge, mastery of, and compliance with SOP's; tracking employee paperwork demonstrating commitment to comply with SOP's.
- Manage workflow and training for personnel while monitoring customer satisfaction.
- Coach and develop employees to ensure needed skills are available to meet lab needs.
- Develop annual budget and oversee annual spending within approved budget parameters to ensure supplies are available and the lab is kept in good condition.
- Foster a culture to maintain EHS (environmental, health and safety) compliance by allocating resources, establishing expectations, and holding teams accountable for adherence to EHS policies, procedures and best practices, reviewing reports and ensuring corrective action for unsafe acts or conditions, incidents, and deviations; and participating in the continuous improvement in EHS performance through management systems.

Education & Experience:
- Minimum 7 years of experience of experiences as a chemist, metallurgist, or related field.
- Minimum 1 year in a leadership role.
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or other natural sciences.
- Must have laboratory specific MSHA/OSHA and environmental training, or ability to obtain once hired.
- Experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment and conducting regular assessments to record the lab equipment's performance.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Mathematical aptitude for accessing accuracy and precision of sample analysis and related trending of results and QA/QC samples.
- Proficient ability to read and understand laboratory results/data.
- Proficient in managing workflow and personnel appropriately to keep up the sample demands.
- Proficient in coaching, managing and leading teams.
- Highly organized with attention to detail.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, budgeting (Adaptive), Invoicing (Dataserv), I-Series (LIMS, ETMS), Database (PI, MS SQP Server, Access, AcQuire), HRIS (UKG) and PeopleSoft.
- Proficient in compliance with environmental regulations.
- Proficient in compliance with Safety regulations.
- Valid driver's license required (local travel).
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Frequently required to wear personal protective equipment, including but not limited to, a respirator, hearing protection and eyewear, and work near moving, mechanical parts.
- Exposed to moderate noise levels.
- Regularly requires standing, walking, reaching with hands/arms, and repetitive movement; frequently requires grasping and pushing; occasionally requires feeling attributes of objects, driving, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling.
- Requires clarity of vision, precise hand-eye coordination, and the ability to identify and distinguish colors.
- Regularly required to lift up to 15 pounds; frequently required to lift up to 50 pounds; rarely required to lift up to 100 pounds.
